Concert Review: Youngr Is An “American Gladiator” At Le Poisson Rouge
Big hair, an over-sized shirt, and a stage splashed with instruments for him to build his sonic creation. Who am I talking about? A mad scientist? A genius? And where did this happen? I am talking about Youngr, whose Le Poisson Rouge performance was all of the above.
Genius has a way of impacting you, especially when you feel like you are watching it at work. I do not know what I expected from Youngr, but it is, certainly, not what I got, and I say that in the best way. His music has a sun-baked sophistication that made me ASSUME meeting him would be a more laxed outing because his music makes you feel like happily jogging through your day. I, ASSUMED, he would play his keys and sway to the coolness of his rhythms and vocals like the wind does a palm tree. I was not wrong, but I was not right. Youngr is more a hurricane than a gust of wind as he is NEVER still on stage. He makes your eyes think they are watching a shooting star (him); as it moves with a frenetic glee/light you wish you could capture it, but know you cannot. His dynamism is BRILLIANT in transforming his concert into a permanent memory for viewers that believed they were just meeting the man behind the music, but, instead, it felt like they were meeting the creator behind a creation. He approaches his audience and his music with an importance that is NOT pretentious, but warm, caring, and even humorous.
Youngr – Out Of My System
Out Of My System
Youngr is funny, and for those that have read my Alex Lahey review, I appreciate good humor and humility. Rare is the artist that can keep persons equally intrigued in their comedic conversations as well as their music, which is why most artists try to stay with quick quips and sporadic “thank you’s” to the crowd. Yet, like James Hersey, there is something about Youngr that makes you want and actually believe you could hangout with him after the concert (which he did do a meet and greet). Youngr is your incredibly talented “buddy” that you KNOW is going far, and, out of love and loyalty, you will certainly watch. Sparking that approachability only amps up the awe-inspiring motion of Youngr. He owns the stage moving from microphone, to his keyboard, guitar, and to his drums, which he would play in the same song, as if he was in the running for American Gladiator. People were exhilarated by him in the same way you feel pumped when you see a football player about to score a touch-down. You feel as if Youngr treats his songs like “winning strategies” aiming for the “grand play” that will win him the trophy: the audience. He wants to win you, and, like a scientist, he mixes keys, vocals, and side-splitting drum solos to ignite a feel-good chemistry in your mind. I am only using so many imaginative comparisons because, when you see Youngr, you think you are watching the best/ most vibrant show in town, any you LOVE HIM for it!
Too Keen
I liked Youngr before, but I love him after his concert, which is important to know. For people and performers who underestimate the importance of a good concert, Youngr is a good example of how a show could turn like into love and an acquaintance into a fan. In addition, his songs are incredibly infectious. From my favorite, “Out Of My System” to “Disappear” you lay out in his vocals that grow in their charming ease when heard live.
