Concert Review:Your Smith Is Her Truth At Rough Trade
You ever have a weirdly, bad day? It just feels like the entire universe is off on its energy, and every little thing goes wrong: from losing your phone to getting shoved on the train. Of course, those things don’t matter, in the grand scheme of life, but when you are in your feelings they feel like the absolute reason for why the world sucks and apocalypses are welcomed. I had one of those days when I went to see Your Smith at Rough Trade, and I have to say she is POWERFUL because I walked away superbly refreshed.
Honestly, Your Smith gave a performance that was the equivalent to giving your soul a nice, good shower. Songs such as, “Man of Weakness” and “Wild Wild Woman,”and might as well have poured some jasmine soap and cool water to lather my feelings and make them clean again. I have seen Your Smith a few times, and she is always a great performer, but it was as an opener. While, of courses she shined, when a crowd is sold out and strictly there to see YOU, it makes a difference. The weight of the performance is heightened, and you, the artists, becomes the most important, impactful person in a room. Most of us can’t say we have had such a power, but I am glad that Your Smith does.
Your Smith – Man of Weakness
She is so kind, funny, and easy to share her growth, which includes triumphs and failures. To Your Smith, her music is not honest, if she is not honest, and, frankly, I can’t agree more. Don’t get me wrong! Your Smith can whip out a guitar, shake her hips, and belt out a note as if Joy, itself, arrived in a golden chariot to see her show. Nothing takes away the exuberant and instant joviality she spurs in her performance just on being the rare person who can genuinely smile to a sea of strangers. Yet, beneath every beat and chord, was her truth, and it took time and different roads to get to her one fact: being yourself is the only thing you can do to be happy.
Your Smith – The Spot
Near the end of the night, as she lovingly thanked the audience, she said something I really needed to hear. You ever have that? Where someone random, gives you advice or says something that, for some reason and without their knowing, perfectly advised your situation? She was discussing change; how you need to change yourself, which might mean changing those around you or getting the guts to leaving behind what is not working to start anew and find what can for you. I TOTALLY GOT THAT! Moreover, the instance perpetuated Your Smith as a very distinct and needed pop start for this era. Sure, we always need to dance, but we also need to be more thoughtful towards others and ourself, and Your Smith has the sweet voice to guide you in making this truth your reality.
