Concert Review: Yves Jarvis Meets The “Real You” In NYC
There is an idea that “the real you” is stagnant; as if it is a destination and not a choice. Yet, to Yves Jarvis, “the real you” is someone you constantly meet. It is every choice you make, even the ones to be fake, that either prosper, protect, or pummel your heart. Thus, at Brooklyn Steel, his songs felt like a million meetings between you and “the real you.”
I love that concept; the idea of meeting “who I am” a million times across my one life; each time being different but the same. Playing from his newest record, Same But By Different Means, Yves Jarvis has an amazing capacity to make his music feel heavier in weight by making it appear simpler. His show is like having the teacher go through the test you just took, and having a series of “So that was the answer!” moments. it is a gift when you can make complexity both emotionally digestible and relatable. Every person is a simple being feeling difficult towards their life, and Yves Jarvis sings to that.
From “Fruits of Disillusion“ to “ Nerve For The Ages,“ Jarvis voice and presence felt like consolidated energy; as if someone had put the universe in a ziplock bag. He was aiming for bigger notions and vibes through his body, sound, and soul, which is something everyone can relate to. We all try to make every movement of our lives so much “more” while trying to appear fluidly and contained. Yet. Jarvis blends of genres like jazz, Hip Hop, and Neo-soul allow his sound to appear like an erratic frequency moving every which way to breed calm. More importantly, his voice follows suit; picking up a sense of instability in stability.
The realest version of you is never, actually, met because experiences mold your reality, which mold your person. There is no such thing as a choice to be fake because even that choice is a real one with tangible consequences. Beneath layers of sounds and jumping octaves, Yves Jarvis contemplated such personal truths amongst many, and solidified his new moniker will be as insightful as UN Blonde.
