Concert Review: Zealyn Is A Pop Star To Pull For At Knitting Factory
As Zealyn zipped and zagged across the Knitting Factory stage, she felt zapped by a music bug. Her gleeful love to simply perform felt warming and child-like; a reminder that people sing because they love to sing. It is such a simple fact that can be forgotten, especially for artists who have chosen to make their creative talent their livelihood. Yet, Zealyn’s sheer happiness rippled across the audience and her voice.
Zealyn was riffing it up like a young woman dancing and getting ready for a good day, which was a nice contrast considering it was night at a concert hall. I say contrast because a concert feels like the banging end to a long day, but Zealyn treats it like a beginning. She is bright-eyed and smiley as she swings her hair around like it could be in a Garnier Fructis commercial. Yet, that level of unmeasured sweetness frees the audience and her songs to submit into her pop truth: we all want love. Sure, this feels obvious but yet, it is not the most promulgated fact, especially considering a lot of people are taught to not say what they want but imply it.
Zealyn – Faster Now – Official Audio
From “Faster Now” to “A Weekend In Maine,” Zealyn was amiable with crowd, and floated through her set with love for New York. She reminded me of how much talent there is on this earth, and how much it wants to be a star. Yet, Zealyn’s secret is that she has a powerful voice and an accessible friendliness. While the industry is, more than ever, open and touchable in manifesting a career, it still is a world with hiccups to maneuver. Hence, the power of a concert is that it makes people pull for you like a silent vote for you to win “The Pop Star” campaign. Thus, as she scavenged her range as if vocal notes were chocolate eggs you find in a garden, the audience agreed: Zealyn is a pop star to pull for!
