Diandra Interviews Mala Rodriguez: To Know Yourself Is To Know Your Sound

Mala Rodriguez is a badass; creating music that can balance consciousness with carefreeness. It is as if she can strut her stuff with a latex jumpsuit and a bat to bash a bunch of cars to the sound of Reggaeton, but then go off to promote love and peace. How two supposed, contrasting energies live in this one woman explains why she has enraptured so many. Hence, interviewing her had me intrigued as to what responses would come from this fierce songstress.

Diandra: You have said that music is a way of creating the reality you want. What is the reality you desire?

Mala: In reality, tolerance. I would love if people were better to each other. I think any person can inspire another person, and we are all responsible for what we leave behind. If you are a person with solely economic purpose then you are leaving this world sadder. You are letting this world die, and, everyone would agree, the world is more beautiful when we have more purpose than fame and money. We have to want tolerance and happiness.

Diandra: You say forget the money and the fame, but you have both. Is it difficult not to focus on these factors as a successful artist?

Mala: I have had many highs and lows in my career. Yet, I have always considered myself an artist that was “on the low,” and have had many tribulations. Yet, I am grateful to them because I learned so much about myself. In the sufferings you get the lessons you need to take for your successes.

Diandra:  So what are the greater lessons you have learned?

Mala: Love yourself. Be yourself. There is never too much time to love yourself, know yourself, and share your love and knowledge of yourself with the most important people to you. That would be an excellent lesson that I would share with other artists. Know yourself. Focus yourself, and educate yourself. Try everything, but know that it will not take two days for you to “find yourself.” It is a long, glorious road that we have to do anyway. For many artists, they feel they are showing something that is not theirs. They are copying formulas, and losing the purity of themselves and thus their art. You have to accept who you are in order to create. If you truly want to shine then you have to find your own light and brilliance.

Diandra: What would you define then as your light?

Mala: Hmmmmm…For me, certain things make me feel, and I try to experiment and play them through my music. I try to experiment with my songs so as to feel awakened. When you suddenly feel a new idea, it is a magnificent moment. It is like waking up, and you have to let that idea flow: not fight it or push it.

Diandra: So what of performing live makes you awakened?

Mala: Going crazy. When I am on the stage, I want to be free. I want to elevate everything from me. I want to let go of all thoughts and emotions because, if not, I feel like I stay in the middle. Like, “Oh, that was good.”  No, I want to break everything. First, I want to connect with my lyrics: my own words. Then, I want to connect with the music and the rhythms. Then, I want to connect with the lighting and the set. Yet, ultimately, it is my words that I grab and go. They are from where I launch.

Diandra: What is something that you feel you have gotten clearer about through your music career?

Mala: Fears. I think before I was more scared. When you are looking at yourself, for the first time in a mirror, you are not going to like a lot of things. I think through the years I have embraced my sensitivity and accepted it as something about myself so that I could learn to love myself. Yet, in the beginning of any career, like in life, you always start with precaution, but then, suddenly, you start getting really picky. And then, you start getting light and having fun again, and then you might go back to old fears. Everything is a process, and you simply have to make it.
