Diandra Reviews Entertainment News: Beck To Reissue His Entire Catalog On Vinyl

Beck has always been, for me, one of the most masterful musicians to prosper in the music industry. He has a cult-like following that has allowed him to have a career that spans decades and genres. From the beginning of his career, Beck set a vital precedent: I am going to be spontaneous and strange.
One of the most difficult things to surviving the musical industry, is to grow as an artist. Fans, along with executives, may not be the most supportive when you try something different or to show another layer of you spiritual musicality. Yet, Beck has not only survived, but thrived, because he has made it clear: for him, music is a universe to be explored. Each os his songs is like a re-introdution into his soul because you never get the same Beck. He is always new and refreshing. Hence, imagine my excitement at knowing that his multi-grammy winning albums Odelay, Sea Change, and Guero are being reissued on vinyl by Universal Music Group.

Odelay- Originally released 20 years ago on June 18, 1996 on DGC, Odelay was Beck’s breakthrough follow-up to his platinum bow, Mellow Gold. The album sold  more than two million copies in the U.S.,  winning two GRAMMY® Awards in 1997, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for “Where It’s At,” and was Beck’s first album to be nominated for Album of the Year, a top honor he would win throughout his career. Rolling Stone named the album on of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” , and number 9 on its list of the “100 Best Albums of the ‘90s.” These are major statements considering that thousands of albums come out every year!

Sea Change- Beck’s seventh album, Sea Change, signified a dramatic musical shift in sound and tone from its predecessor, the funky, R&B-influenced Midnite Vultures. As all know, no two Beck albums sound the same, yet Sea Change might be one of the few Beck albums that reveal his personal side. Inspired by the dissolution of a longtime relationship, Beck uses raw, confessional lyrics for mindful melodies, subtle strings arrangements, and an overall capturing of the sadness that can overwhelm a person whom thought their love was forever, and now must accept it is not.

Guero- Following Sea Change, Guero came to be Beck’s highest charting album, #2 on the Billboard Top 200, and pummeled through genres with its hypnotic usage of samples and synthesizing of disparate musical elements (hip-hop, robot funk, blues, country, jazz, garage rock, etc). For many, Guero is that rare album where every track feels necessary and beloved to your heart. The fluidity of this album is an emblem of the clear space and genius of Beck’s musical consciousness.
