Diandra Reviews The News: Pissed Jeans To Sing On Male Privilege At Mercury Lounge

Pissed Jeans is playing a Mercury Lounge on June 23 in their continued tour for their most recent album, Why Love Now. Amongst head-bashing guitars and drums and clattering yells of anguish, Pissed Jeans are a just a bunch of guys singing to the difficulty of being a “good guy”. Although you may not expect grunge-punk to be such a platform for “open-mic” sessions on the struggle for consistency in decency, Pissed Jeans shows music, itself, is always a welcoming stage.

Throughout the album, noise levels blare to what seems human volume’s maximum, which hard rockers will always enjoy, but there is a quiet, creakingly spiritual challenge to Why Love Now that makes it way more emotionally/ lyrically intriguing. Being a man who wants to be good to women should be a given, but how you measure that goodness is where the lines of generosity and equality are drawn. “I’m A Man”, “Love Without Emotion”, and “Ignorecam” are just a few of the tracks that show the insecurities and fight for openness a man can endure in trying to empower women, while not feeling disenfranchised or too saintly for such an attempt. Every lady has seen “the guy” who fights for women’s rights for a “number” or applause, or the “other man” who sees women’s rights like the deep end of a pool he is not sure he wants to swim in, despite his expertise in swimming, For however strong a man can feel in his masculinity, if he defines it according to the supposed weakness of femininity, then he cannot truly call himself empowered and self-confident. These terms are strictly for people who could stand on their own without standing on others, but power does not require you to be empowered. Hence, tracks like“The Bar Is Low”, “(Won’t Tell You) My Sign”, and “Not Even Married” describe male privilege, in essence, like a deck of cards, in which you were only playing and winning games of solitaire, but, suddenly, someone (female equality) asked you to play poker and redefine how you always saw yourself as winning. The notion is scary, but if you dare, can be the worthiest excitement you ever had. Thus, check out Pissed Jeans Mercury Lounge show on June 23 to go crazy on sickening instrumentals and words that, actually, add new conversation to needed discussions.
