Event Review: Katie’s Art Project Goes Freestyle Love Supreme.

It is amazing how our childhood friends stay, forever, in our minds even when they are gone. Like first loves, our friends are essential in defining what we need, want, and should aim for in choosing the people we love in life. For Hamilton’s Stephanie Klemons,  Katie was a great friend that died too young and sickly. Despite being a teenager, Katie struggled for years with this illness, which taught Stephanie, as her best friend, what it is to keep your head up through ups, downs, and art.

Katie’s Art Project, of which you can donate here, held a special raffle, where guests bid for cool prizes like dance classes, spas, and knick knacks that would make a puppy say, “Now that is cozy!” The event was filled with cast members from Hamilton, fellow Broadway stars, and, more importantly, friends. As they all stood around and chatted, art was on display from various painters and photographers like, Jordan Matter. The whole point of Katie’s Art Project is to bring the stars to terminally ill children, and, together, create art projects that will last forever. It is a beautiful initiative because even when you are down, creating something lifts you up. No sickness can take away the beauty and fun of dreaming something up with others and making it real.

While the win of the night, a sky box to Billy Joel’s MSG concert, went for above 2000 dollars, the night was really casual. Smiles and jeans were abound as people looked at art, learned further about Katie’s Art Project, and got a preview of Freestyle Love Supreme’s upcoming run at the Booth Theatre. The Hip Hop improv group, created by Lin Manuel Miranda, will start its Broadway run on September 13, and, by the previews, it is going to be wildly fun, admirably creative, and… .FUNNY! So get excited, but, first, donate to Katie’s Art Project here.
