Diandra Interviews Anna Sofia: We All Are Broken Perfection

When it comes to Anna Sofia, nothing is perfect, but, to her, that is the point. She may still be in highschool, but, as I always say, never underestimate a person and their capacity for wisdom. After all, such a virtue is not born from age, but it is born from maturity. With that in mind, Broken Perfection, introduces a more grown Anna Sofia; a girl whom has found her niche, a tight group of friends, and is learning to be less hard on herself. Thus, from the strength of Harry Potter to plans for her debut album, Anna discusses her influences to growing up and better.

Diandra: What does Broken Perfection mean to you?

Anna Sofia: Broken Perfection means nobody’s perfect. All my life I’ve suffered with body image issues and I wanted to speak up about it through my music to be able to reach out to anyone else who has felt the same as me. Suffering with body image issues was really hard to talk about for me at the start. So I wanted to open up about it to normalize the topic and give others the confidence to open up as well.

Anna Sofia – Don’t Play Pretend (Official Music Video)

Diandra: This EP covers everything from self-esteem to the strength of having fun with friends. What are the things you most appreciate about yourself, especially in terms of what you give to others?

Anna Sofia: I think I most appreciate my honesty. I’m super open in my music and it’s helped me personally, and I’ve been told it’s helped others as well. It’s the best feeling in the world to know while helping yourself, you’re helping others. I used to be very quiet about my feelings and felt embarrassed to speak about them. Through music, I developed this comfort in speaking about my feelings, and it’s really helped me grow as a person.

Diandra: How do you feel this EP further introduces who you are as a person, especially in personality?

Anna Sofia: In my opinion this EP has shown me growing as a person and as a musician. My music style has definitely evolved and I’ve started to get a lot more comfortable in my own space. I also started to open up more with my lyrics and explore things deeper in my sound. This EP also just shows me growing up as a teenager. I’ve

matured more and have many more things to speak about in my music.

Diandra:  When you compare Self-Aware Bitch to Broken Perfection, how do they reveal different sides to your highschool experience?

Anna Sofia: I think the transition from the first EP to the second was me really just finding myself. I got to know myself a lot better and learned what I like and dislike. I found my key group of friends and just settled down in a really healthy environment. I think that’s what’s given me a chance to get comfortable in my writing space. Now that I know myself better, I know exactly what I want to say and what I want things to sound like and that’s really helped me out in my music.

Diandra: What is one message from this EP that you send to listeners and wish you would hear more often?

Anna Sofia: One message I was really trying to send through this EP was “nobody’s perfect.”Yes, people have definitely spoken about it in their music, but it’s not the main focus. Because I’ve really struggled with body image issues throughout my life, I challenged myself to take my insecurities, and use them to reach out to people just like me and let them know that they are not alone. It’s definitely very comforting to know that.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory of music?

Anna Sofia: I think my favourite memory is performing for my family every week. Nobody in my family is musical, it’s just me! So I always loved to entertain. I remember I used to come downstairs with my karaoke set and dance and sing for hours and hours until I started to fall asleep. The best part about it was I only had one CD to sing to so the family heard the same songs for every show.

Diandra Gossip and stories get around quick in a small town. What is one town story that inspired a song?

Anna Sofia: Well, I have many town stories that I’ve used in my music, but I have only one favourite. My favourite town story was the “No Fun” story. So, the “no fun’ story was all about this party that was thrown for me and a few other friends’ birthdays. Basically everything that I say in that song is exactly what happened that night. The best moment of that night was when some kid couldn’t get in the house through the doors, because they were locked, so instead he decided to break the basement window to get in. That was a really bad story in the moment, but now it’s so funny to think back on.

Anna Sofia – Self Aware Bitch

Diandra: You have said you can’t change for people. Who are the people that taught you the power of authenticity and what it means?

Anna Sofia: My mom was the one who taught me self-love. She always saw me struggling with self-love and hated that I went through that. My mom gave me some really amazing advice to hopefully help me realize my worth. She told me that no matter what people think, you are amazing the way you are. People will learn to love you for you and who you want to be. She told me to never surround myself with people that want to change me, and she told me to always remember my worth and to never let anyone take that away from me.

Anna Sofia – No Fun

Diandra: With two EPs under your belt, what are your plans for your debut? Is there a title or a core message?

Anna Sofia: Sonically, I’m working on some really cool stuff. Almost like a modern take on some older, funky disco vibes. I’m really excited about the music I’ve been creating lately. As far as messaging, I don’t have anything set in stone, but of course I’ll be speaking honestly about topics that are from mine and my friends’ daily lives. Everyday

challenges and the ups and downs of growing up and finding yourself.

Diandra: What movies, TV shows, or books do you most love? Which characters would you be in them and why?

Anna Sofia: My favouriteeeee TV show of all time is Full House. If I were to be any character in that show, I would be Michelle Tanner. She is the youngest sister, and just seems like she has such a fun life as a kid. I love big families and never had sisters or brothers so getting to experience sisterhood would be super cool. A movie that I absolutely love is Harry Potter. I love all of them so much and I would definitely be Harry. First of all, he’s a wizard and I’d do anything to be a wizard for a day, and second, he’s the target all the time. Ya, I’d be literally terrified if I was the most dangerous person’s target, but if I was super powerful like Harry, I’d be ready to fight.

Me: LOVE THAT RESPONSE!
