Diandra Interviews Fanny Andersen: The Happy/Sad of A Good Song

Fanny Andersen is an open book. Similar to Maggie Rogers and Frank Ocean, her rise in fame took her aback. Like for many artists, life doesn’t, necessarily, keep clear from hardship because you have a set your path in an industry that is hard enough. Personal heartbreaks and literal break-ups, including one with her management, led Fanny to a mental breakdown that, eventually, led her to a sonic breakthrough. On May 14, she returns with her new single, “Wake Up,” a sassy track that is laced with snappy rhythms and honest verses on what it means to cope: a topic we approach in this interview.

Diandra: How has music helped you learn mental clarity and spiritual strength?

Fanny Andersen: Being able to express all your deepest darkest thoughts can clear your mind in a way I haven’t experienced in any other way than writing and making music. I think, a lot of times, I can write about stuff I don’t ever want to talk about, but then when I’ve written it, it kind of opens the gate to be able to talk, as well. So yeah, it’s key for my mental clarity to write; I would go insane without it. With my spiritual strength, I would count myself as the least spiritual person I know (laughs). But I would love to get into it a bit more, and be a more spiritual person, but yeah, music helps me and strengthens me, in every way, so I bet it has helped a lot there as well.

Diandra: What is one thing you learned about yourself in making and writing “Wake Up!”

Fanny Andersen: That I’m not as afraid as I thought. I always looked at myself as someone who is too scared to be that honest and open about a really dark period in my life, but here I am proving myself wrong.

Diandra: Describe a moment in your life when you feel your heart needed to or had awakened?

Fanny Andersen: In really unhealthy relationships! I wish I could go back and scream to myself ”YOU DESERVE TO BE TREATED BETTER GIRL GET THE FUCK OUT OF THIS TOXIC RELATIONSHIP!”

Diandra: What has heartbreak taught you about what it means to love?

Fanny Andersen: I would say heartbreak has taught me that we allow too much, and that we need to protect ourselves in a romanic relationship. But I think friendship is what has thought me most about unconditional love.

Diandra: How do you feel writing upbeat songs with lyrics on sadness oddly represent what it is to suffer depression?

Fanny Andersen: (laughs) Yeah, it’s very true. You have this sadness inside, but, from the outside, it can seem like everything is fine because you put up a front. So i would say it does!

Diandra: What are the songs, for you, that most prove music is universal in feeling?

Fanny Andersen: Right now, i would say everything Rosalia. I don’t understand ONE word, but it gives you all the right vibes! It’s really interesting, how you can listen to stuff where you have NO idea what they are saying, but you can almost feel what they are expressing. That’s one of the things that is just amazing with music.

Diandra: What are the highs and lows of modern life that your music captures?

Fanny Andersen: We live in a world with just crazy expectations in how you live your life: you need to work out, be cute on instagram, make the trendy Tiktok coffee, be social in addition to career and life in general. This pressure gets to me a lot. So I would think there is a tone of that in my music. With highs, i yet have to experience them. JOKING! Despite of all these things our modern world also gives us the opportunity to connect to and relate to people all over the world., and that is super empowering. I always write from my own emotions, so if i’m having a shitty day, the song is gonna be about that. If i’m having a good ass day, what i write is going to be positive.

Diandra: How do you feel Wake Up represents the music future and meaning of Fanny Andersen?

Fanny Andersen: It’s the sound of a new start. Writing that song made everything click for me after having a long period without really being able to write anything i was happy with. So i’m super exited to share everything thats to come.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?

Fanny Andersen: My father’s family ls from a city called Sandes, and it’s a 8-9 hour drive from Oslo. We would drive there, maybe, twice a year, and I have so many amazing memories of the three of us in the car, listening to my dad’s music, that was usually Frank Zappa or Queen or something like that. Everyone singing along to all the songs we knew. It was a magical feeling.

Diandra: You have said you are 100% yourself in your music. What are the personality traits your music shares with you?

Fanny Andersen: Hmmmm …..The songs are usually up-beat, but with sadness in them, and i can relate to that! I also feel like i want them to feel a little bit light even when the song is about something that’s very dark. That’s very me.
