Diandra Interviews Finn Matthews: Going To L.A. In A Sunny Daze
Finn Matthews is growing up, which is a theme that is taking center stage music: no matter what age you are. From 16 to 46, singers are writing about learning to feel better and different: not just more. With his newest single, Sunny Daze, released, Finn Matthews looks to see how life in L.A. has grown who he is as a person and artist.
Diandra: How has living In LA, i.e. “Sunny Daze,” showed you who you want to be as a person and artist? What are the qualities you wish to see in yourself?
Finn Matthews: The great part about living in LA is that I’ve been exposed to so many different people, cultures, and ideas, and this has really allowed me to find who I am as a person and caused my creativity to flourish. I always try to be positive and understanding towards others. I put myself in other people’s shoes and empathize with how they’re feeling. I make music because I want to make music that myself and other people feel at home and understood listening to.

Diandra: Leaving home, at a young age, and going into a full-blown career, what are the things you do to feel fun, fresh, and clear?
Finn Matthews: I love doing new things every day like, trying a new food or walking through a neighborhood I’ve never seen before. It’s also super important to me to maintain healthy relationships with friends and family. The people who I care about most in my life are the most important thing and they give me the drive to push through no matter what. Other times, I’ll have a conversation with a stranger and it can spark a lot of creativity just by hearing their story. Those little things that we often take for granted are what keep me inspired.
Diandra: L.A. is known for “image.” How is image important to you, as an artist, and how have you seen that importance and its manifestation grow?
Finn Matthews: Image is very important to me. Not in the sense that I always need to look flawless, but more in the sense that I have something to say, and everything I do, from the way I act to the way I dress, has to be cohesive with what I’m trying to say. Clothing for me is an awesome way to express myself and set myself apart. I like to take trends and add onto them to create my own styles. I’ve definitely had to learn how to navigate this space safely, because a lot of people can let it consume their entire lives, but I want my image to evolve with my life in an effortless way.
Diandra: What is the best and hardest part about making a talent or a dream, i.e. singing, into a reality? How do you try to protect the dreaminess of it all?
Finn Matthews: I would say the most difficult part about making your dreams into reality is really just getting started. It all seems very overwhelming, at first, but you just have to jump in. Just take any opportunity you can get and you will learn as you go. It’s all apart of the journey and it’s such a rewarding experience. The best part is seeing yourself progress and realizing your true potential. The way I protect the “dreaminess” is by always having new goals to work towards. So in a way, my dreams for myself are constantly evolving as time goes on.

Diandra: Writing songs about relationships, what is the biggest lesson you have learned while being in love and the biggest lesson you learned while being in heartbreak?
Finn Matthews: One thing I’ve learned from relationships is that it’s okay to feel vulnerable and open. When you let someone see and know everything about you, especially for the first time, it’s a crazy emotional experience, and I’ve been able to carry that over into my music and learn so much more about myself through that. The biggest thing I learned from heartbreak is that you really have so focus on yourself no matter what. You have to pick yourself back up and keep going. It can feel selfish at times, but the only person who is going to be there for you 100% is you.
Diandra: What is a song of yours that left you the most proud and vulnerable?
Finn Matthews: The next song I’m releasing in January is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made. It is about coming out of my shell and accepting myself for who I am. I’m naturally a very sensitive person so making the song was so empowering for myself, and I hope it can empower others as well.
Diandra: As an artist that writes according concepts, what is the concept of your future album and what are a few concepts you would like to touch upon?
Finn Matthews: The main concept of most of my music is centered around growing up. At this stage in my life, I’m learning so much about the world and figuring out who I am, as a person, that there is always something new for me to reflect on or talk about. I want people who are also in that position to feel powerful when they listen to my music; inspired to become who they are going to be and not being afraid of judgment and not being afraid of what others think of you. Once you free yourself from those mental barriers, your potential is endless.

Diandra; Going off the idea of “concepts,” are there any films, books, or artworks that inspire music within you?
Finn Matthews: I’m getting more and more into films every day. One film that has inspired a bunch of songs for me is Titanic. It’s the nostalgic vibe that draws me in. I’m borderline obsessed with the feeling of nostalgia, why we feel it, and why it feels so beautiful. If you listen to my music, you can hear a sonic signature that is based on my obsession for that feeling. Creating vibes like that is one of the reasons I fell in love with producing music.
Diandra: You describe your music as honest. How do you use music to seek truth about or within yourself? Do you feel being a songwriter makes you more truthful as a person?
Finn Matthews: Music is very alien to me and it constantly blows my mind. It brings out emotions that I didn’t even know I had. When I’m writing, songs can just flow out of me in a completely natural way. I think music unlocks different parts of our subconscious mind which is why we’re able to feel music so powerfully. Through songwriting, I have been able to channel that way of thinking into my everyday life. Often I find myself wondering, “if I were to write a song about this, what would I say?”. At the end of the day, though, I think honesty is something that is rooted in your intentions. If you have good intentions and want to be as real as possible, you find yourself being much more honest.
