Diandra Interviews Hannah Cohen: Growing Up, Growing Honest
When I was younger I wanted to help all my friends, family, and the world, but now, that I am older, I have realized how detrimental it is to never even think of yourself as part of your own “care/ help list.” People say when you get older, you get “tired;” as if it is a physical effect. The truth is you get “tired” in terms of old behaviors, which are not, necessarily, partying. As responsibilities grow and the feeling that time and your desires are being more framed into capsules, suddenly, you see that you need to be your own “partner.” Too much time is wasted on sadness and anxiety, and, in our interview, Hannah Cohen discusses how her new album helped her fight to take that time back.
Diandra: You have said, after a long time, you are now writing the songs you want to write. Why do you feel it took you so long to get to this place?
Hannah Cohen: It takes time to become good at something and I’m still working towards getting “good” at songwriting. I think I will be forever a student and will always be studying the craft of songwriting.
Hannah Cohen – This Is Your Life
Diandra: You have said you found a place within yourself. How would you describe that place?
Hannah Cohen: Turning 30 gave me a better perspective on life. I’m much kinder to myself.
Diandra: Welcome Home promotes mindfulness and inner peace. What are the things you do to bring serenity into your life?
Hannah Cohen: Going to bed before midnight. Not drinking more than 2 cocktails. Hanging out with cats and dogs. Spending time in nature. Listening to music.
Diandra: New York has been a great influence on your life and music. If you could describe New York like a song, how would you do so?
Hannah Cohen:Seinfeld Theme Song
Me: She’s not wrong!
Diandra: Welcome Home is self-reflective. What ignited such self-reflections and what do you feel is most powerful part about being transparent with yourself?
Hannah Cohen: Admitting when you are wrong and owning up to that.
Diandra: Now that the album has been released and you are beginning to tour for it, how has your relationship with the record grown?
Hannah Cohen: I enjoy traveling with these songs and playing them in a new town each night. Now the songs have wheels and they continue to be a moving meditation for me.
