Diandra Reviews It All- Interviews Hannah Georgas: Life Inspires

What I loved about Hannah Georgas newest album, All That Emotion, is that it felt like a confrontation with yourself in front of a spiritual mirror: reflective, dark, and, ultimately, healing. For Hannah, music is enlightenment, and if she wants to be happy then she has to enlighten her past. Yet, traumas and anxious behaviors are not the easiest thing to “enlighten.” In our interview, we discuss how simple things like watching Sleepless In Seattle or imagining the day you could tell Donald Trump he is a lunatic, to his face, really do make for good music.

Diandra: Everyday life is your music inspiration. What are the random, banal, routine, beautiful, and even boring things about daily life that inspire song to you?

Hannah: I think listening is an important tool for writing. I have really good conversations with friends about life and all the challenges that come along with it. I watch movies and tv and that inspires me and seems to give me ideas. I dream a lot. Sometimes, I wake up and I’m like what the heck. I go for walks and listen to music podcasts and that can inspire ideas.

Diandra: If you could make Sleepless in Seattle into a song, what is one lyric you would write from it, and which character would sing it? Why?

Hannah: “I only thought I could find you in dreams I’ve had!” Tom Hanks would sing those lyrics when he’s thinking about Meg Ryan.

Diandra: What are some of the emotions people will find in ALL THAT EMOTION?

Hannah: I think you’ll find sadness, hope, calmness, hurt, loneliness, openness, optimism. Those are some of the emotions I was feeling when I was writing the songs off the album.

Diandra: Dreams is about breaking down insecurities to let someone in. What have your relationships taught you to love about yourself?

Hannah: I’ve learned that I make mistakes and things aren’t perfect. I know I have my own patterns and habits I’ve created over the years in order to protect myself from getting hurt. I’ve learned to own up to my shit a little more and take responsibility for my actions. I think when you start realizing those things you stop being so hard on yourself. I haven’t figured it all out, that’s for sure, but I’m trying to be more open and honest.

Diandra: For you, music is about vulnerability. Is there a song, on the record, that left you most vulnerable or displays your utmost vulnerability?

Hannah: I think “Same Mistakes” really explores those feelings. It’s about understanding that your upbringing can have a big impact on who you are in good ways and other ways that are challenging. I think I have the opportunity to recognize that, unpack it, and work on it. It’s not easy to talk about family stuff, sometimes, but I think it’s bigger than me and important to share stuff.

Diandra: Singing to anxiety, what is the one part about making an album that most makes you anxious?

Hannah: There’s all kinds of things that make me anxious just because I’m an anxious person. The mixing process can make me feel anxious sometimes. It’s tricky getting a mix back and having to dig in, when you’re not in the studio, and give notes. It all works itself out but when that initial email comes in, with the first mix,I get really anxious.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?

Hannah: My teacher taught me piano, growing up, and that was pretty amazing. She was always so supportive and believed in me. I remember a few years back I was playing at a club in Toronto and as I was walking on stage someone started calling out my name.  I realized that it was my piano teacher standing at the very front. I crouched over to her to say hi and she told me that she was so proud of me and that she always had high hopes for me. I almost balled my eyes out.

Diandra: Driving from Toronto to Hudson Valley, what was your favorite, most inspiring stop?

Hannah: I barely stopped to be honest. I was always on a mission and would only stop to go pee. It was a gorgeous drive though. I drove through so many beautiful small towns. I really looked forward to those long drives of solitude. They were so peaceful.

Diandra: What was the wisest thing a friend told you about love and heartbreak?

Hannah: I think maybe that time will help heal things. It can be an annoying piece of advice to receive at the time because I’m an impatient person but it really does give you a lot of perspective.

Diandra: With conversations inspiring songs, what is one topic or conversation you wish you could discuss and with who?

Hannah: Maybe, with Donald Trump and why he’s such a crazy lunatic? And why would he want to be president again when he’s done such a terrible job?

Diandra: From fear to love, your songs are based on the people you know. Who is one person you know that can be found in. a song and which one?

Hannah: I don’t really think it’s fair for me to name names because most of my songs have a more serious tone. This is the time I wish I wrote a song about a pet or something.  I do have a song called Ode To Mom off one of my earlier records and that song is definitely about my mom.
