Diandra Interviews Janaesound: Facing Fear To Build Your Sound
If there is one thing most artists have in common when creating their music, it is the process of catharsis. Whether you are trying to face your fear or simply revel in the joy of making something beyond yourself, “creating,” as a process, is a spiritual one. Enter Janaesound as a rising songstress whose soulful vocality elevates her beyond genre. Like a moth to the flames, you listen to her beautiful, raw tracks on what it is to be a “diamond in the rough”.
Diandra: “Break Me Down” was inspired by a series of unfortunate music woes. What have you learned from these woes about what it means to be an artist in this day and age?
Janaesound: While I don’t believe in glamorizing pain/struggles, I’ve learned a ton from the woes. Mainly, to accept them, expect them and not to dwell on them. I’m grateful for the lows just as I am for the highs. (They make my songwriting process easier, haha)
Diandra: Using music as a way to heal yourself, what is a song of yours, currently unreleased, that the public can be excited to hear but was also cathartic for you?
Janaesound: My next single is called Feared. I had so much fun writing this one and it sounds completely different than my previous releases. In the song, I’ve personified my Fear and we have a conversation.
Diandra: You only debuted as JanaeSound in 2017. How did you see 2018 as a growth to your career, and what do you expect of 2019?
Janaesound: 2018 was insane! I played some great local festivals (Maine), played over 60 shows in seven states (without a manager or agent), performed on both coasts at my dream list venues (The Mint La and The Bitter End NYC), finished my first EP and started writing another, designed my own merch, two of my up-cycled jackets were featured in WMPGs annual fashion show in Portland, Maine, heard my song on commercial radio for the first time.
2019 will bring more music, more shows in new cities, my first janaesound music video. I’m extremely excited about participating in the BMI Showcase at Hotel Café March 4th.
Diandra: You have been performing since childhood. How has music changed in meaning and comfort, to you, as you have grown?
Janaesound: I love music and performing with the same passion and wonder as 9 year old me. The only difference is that I treat my music as a business and a brand.
Diandra: With an EP to be released this year, what are the particular messages you want your songs to give audiences?
Janaesound: My songs are all about self empowerment and overcoming whatever obstacle is in your way.
Diandra: Looking back on your life, what has been your most inspiring moment as a singer?
Janaesound: The best is yet to come. Playing The Bitter End was a special moment; so many of my favorites have played there.
Diandra: Having already written songs for catharsis, do you feel music must come from a personal space to truly thrive?
Janaesound: It is easier for me to for me to write something I’ve experienced but there are no rules in songwriting, in my opinion.
Diandra: If you could write a Thanks/Love You note to Music, what would it say?
Janaesound: Dear Music,
Thank you for giving me purpose, a reason to keep going, and an outlet. Thank you for teaching me to be fearless in my pursuit of you. We’ve already done more together than I ever dreamed possible, but I’ll always be happy as long as we are together.
