Album Review: Juletta + Ishan Wonder “If I Never Hit Land”

We talk about the current music stratosphere as an ambiance; an atmosphere built by relaxed sounds that feel born from both the cosmos and our couch. With the world becoming so expensive yet so advanced, all at once, it seems right that a DIY scene grew in music and from our little coaches we confronted existential crises through Logic Pro. In In “If I Never Hit Land,”  Juletta and Ishan, reveal how a pair headphones can become a door to universal questioning and romantic hiccups. For however smooth, our generation’s chill vibes may be, I don’t know if I have heard enough songs be lushed with a rhythmic tenderness that both gardened and marveled upon wanting love. This is a universal desire and, from “Solstice”. to “Gut Feeling,” this album swims in the galactic softness of this want but the heaviness of its landing. It feels like an 80s inspired mixtape Carl Sagan gifted Sade, and I have a feeling that is EXACTLY what these ethereal, experimental artists desired.

As Juletta says: “This album is my account and my experience of the memories, the tears shed, the echoing thoughts and the complexities from 30 interviews with women from the city. And within those stories is a story of my own.” In In “If I Never Hit Land”, Juletta + Ishan observe relationships and youth not as if it was art, but as if it a science textbook you crack open to memorize terms and processes. Imagine?! The whole process of “finding the one” being found in Chapter 12 under astrological physiognomy. The result makes the quest for love feel astronomical and scientific; as if two people connecting is the equivalent to two cells combining to give life. It is fascinatingly beyond and intimate all at once.

Sure, that prior notion sounds complex, but from Ishan’s production to Juletta’s voice, the album is light and starry; reminding listeners the sky may be intricate but is simple to look at. From “Airborne” to “Wildheart” Juletta + Ishan’s sound help you escape our current world to imagine somewhere else. We need that right now, and you can get it on October 16.
