Album Review: Sasha Sloan Embraces The “Only Child”

I was really surprised listening to Sasha Sloan’s “Only Child” LP. The songstress is known for writing her songs as if her emotions were the ink. She is beloved by her growing fanbase because she is the “sadgirl;” appearing to them like the most popular outcast. She musters that feeling of being incredibly lonely even if the you are surrounded by people at a party dedicated to you! In Only Child, she breathes a new, even more acoustic sadness to really wanting love but still learning how to receive it.

I have seen Sasha Sloan a few times in concert, and she makes feeling bad for yourself okay. Of course, I am going against popular opinion, but sometimes it is perfectly fine and normal to say, “ I can’t believe that happened to me!” or “I am devastated that (insert name) was not as good as I thought.” The way she makes wisdom feel relatable is palpable throughout tracks like, “Lie,” “Hypochondriac,” “High School Me,” and “Someone You Hate.” She lyrically simplifies how complex we feel when we lose a friend, end things with a lover, or, plainly, don’t feel like our old selves.

What makes Only Child so exciting for Sasha Sloan’s career is that she has bottled what her fans love of her and made it into a perfect, sonic potion. From “Matter To You” to “Until It Happens To You,” her voice feels really warm and dripping sweetness. She breaks into feelings like one would a hot, chocolate cookie. Of course, that may seem like a silly comparison, but it works, especially for the future of Pop. People want to hear either the sadness of optimism or the optimism of sadness. In essence, don’t get too dark or too light because, for most of us, life happens in between both.

Many have tried to figure out the massive, instant success of artists like, Billie Eilish, especially because they feel like the future of the genre. In this post-pandemic people want to be lifted gently, and Sasha Sloan does that by creating a sound soft enough to have her listeners embrace their heart but rhythmic enough to have them invest their minds.
