Diandra Interviews Local Nomad: Born For Twilight

Local Nomad is fun, vibrant, and raw. His new, self-titled EP embraces years of tragedy to come out with a sound that is ANYTHING but tragic. It is as id he has transferred sadness and stress into 80’s uninspired tracks on resilience. In a way, choosing to have a good time and put you energy into positive things is a form of resistance and strength. In our interview, he talks about learning to be a better person and wishing he could have been on the Twilight soundtrack.

Diandra: You chose the name “Local Nomad” out of resistance to a sedentary life. What are the unknown places or adventures you wish to have?

Local Nomad: I’d love to move to Iceland for a few years and just reset with a completely different vantage point. I think everyone could benefit from an escape like that.

Diandra: You created this EP/ your artist name after a period of tragedies, heartbreak, and pure stress. What did music help you see as the most significant lesson to be learned from that period of time?
Local Nomad – SUMMERTIME

Local Nomad: Songs are an exaggeration of real life and so, in this case, all the songs on this EP are true experiences. The most significant thing I’ve learned is to let go of things that don’t serve you well in life. I am now more careful with how much energy I put into people, situations, or jobs. Overall life is a balance and you have to learn how to keep a level head.

Diandra: Which song from the EP did you feel left you most at peace with that period? Why?

Local Nomad: I feel at peace with all of the songs. “Love is Gone” is sort of the anthem that propelled me out of the letting go period and on the other end, “Summertime” allows me to bask in the nostalgia of youth. I’m glad people are digging the LOCAL NOMAD EP and hope they will keep listening so I can tour the world in 2022.

Diandra: Because Local Nomad represents to you the search for one’s self, what have your past relationships taught you about yourself?

Local Nomad: They’ve taught me to be honest with myself and others. Life is all about knowing your strengths and weaknesses and using them to your advantage. I’ve learned that kindness goes a long way. I’m trying my best to put good music/ energy out into the world because it attracts positivity.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?

Local Nomad: The time I won my high school’s talent show with my neighbor Dylan.

Diandra: Your music is about overcoming hard times, what are the songs that always put you in a happy place?

Local Nomad: Off the top of my head, a song that puts me in a happy place is “Talent Show” by The Replacements. My favorite type of songs are the ones that embody both joy and sadness. This is why I love a lot of 80’s music and songs in the American songbook.

Diandra: Your music is also about empathy: feeling better to make others feel good. Describe an impactful moment when someone was kind to you.

Local Nomad: My friend Ben once lent me his Strat for about 2 years for recording. I loved that guitar and my time with it definitely rippled across the music I would make for years to follow. I really connected with that instrument and grew as a player because it was inspiring to play. It felt and sounded incredible.

Diandra: You wrote a “romantic” song about friendship.  Do you feel building a friendship is like building a romance?

Local Nomad: “Gates” is about caring for another human being that is having a hard time in life. It’s more of an anthem of friendship disguised in a romantic aura.

Sometimes when you write a song, you don’t always know what you’re writing about till it’s finished. In this case, in the song “Gates,” the song started off as just a stream of consciousness and as I began to finish it I realized, subconsciously, it became about my friend who was struggling with addiction.

Diandra: What do your friends bring out of you, from personality to goals, compared to other types of relationships?

Local Nomad: My friend and producer Nick is a hard-working guy who pushes me to become a better person, musician & writer. Most of my friends bring out the comedian in me. I love to make funny bits and act them out. I love to entertain people.

Diandra: Ultimately, what do you want this EP to say about your style and spirit?

Local Nomad: I want people to know that I write honest songs. I want people to know I stand for equality and the well being of others. I want people to know that I’m ruthless and will stop at nothing until everyone knows Local Nomad!

Diandra:  If you could compare or describe making a song to like one would describe baseball, how would you do it?

Local Nomad: Writing a song is kind of like pitching. Different batters that step up to the plate are like different life experiences. Each calls for a different kind of song. Different kind of approach. Different kinds of pitches.
Local Nomad – GETTING OLD IS A BITCH

Diandra: What is a movie or book, you would love to convert into a song? Which character would you be in it and why?

Local Nomad: I think I’ve already accomplished this with “Young Vampires. I wish I could go back in time and release it on the Twilight soundtrack 🙂
