Diandra Interviews Malachi: Singing To Love Right Now

What a difference a year makes! Last year, Malachi released Breadwinner, and EP dedicated to his roots and the family that taught him how to be a man. This year, on May 15, he is releasing Right Now; an EP dedicated to the man he wants to be for the woman he loves; wherever she may be. For Malachi, being young and ambitious, means falling in love is not easy, but that does not mean romance is hard. On the contrary, in this interview, he shows he is quite the romantic.

Diandra: It has been a year since you released you last EP, BreadWinner. How have you grown since then?

Malachi: I’m always evolving, I’m always adapting to new ideas, and I have, definitely, gained strengths.

Diandra: It seems like, with this Right Now, you are going more into love songs.

Malachi: Absolutely! I have to show off my versatility. I can’t just be put inside a box, and people have me figured out.
MALACHI – Right Now

Diandra: What do you think Right Now will say about love?

Malachi: The Power of It! The Strength of It! How much of it is put up on a pedestal and is understandable and in the most respectful way. I feel like so much of that is missing, right now, about love. I feel like there is so much aggression recently, in Hip Hop and R&B; it is really focused on attack mode and being aggressive as opposed to how there always needs to be love. It needs be the other side of the coin. You always need that love there. It should always be love over fear.

Diandra: What have you past relationships taught you about how you love?

Malachi: The ups and down of it all; the things you do with your heart as opposed to your mind. It takes over you. You become a different person when you are using your heart; the crazy things you do for love and giving your heart to someone by putting them first.
MALACHI – I Got You

Diandra: You had said in our previous interview that, at this age, you can’t fall in love. Do you still feel like that?

Malachi: I feel like you should always put yourself first with your career and job, but there are so many mistakes, like that being said right there, where your heart takes over your mind. Love takes over, and it is harder, when you are young, to know and be with someone for the rest of your life.

Diandra: In honor of “Aquafina”, what is your favorite, summer night memory?

Malachi: OoooooOOOOoo! Probably, being in LA, and making the very first record of the EP, “Soul Is Mine.” We stayed up all night, and wanted to make sure that we had everything right: every single note and every fluid flow.

Diandra: What is the most important story you tell through a song in this EP?

Malachi: “Out of My Reach,” which comes out the same day as the EP: May 15. It is a story about this woman I crave so bad, but she is out of my reach. I am trying to do everything I can to get her back.
MALACHI – Soul Is Mine

Diandra: Is there anything in your life you feel is coming into reach?

Malachi: Coming into terms of myself and trying to be the best I want to be. I am slowly learning about who I want to be and what kind of man I am growing up to be.

Diandra: What personality trait, of yours, do you find in your music?

Malachi: Positivity! Always keeping it as a mindset. Of course, I can be  stressed and irritable, but its about staying positive and moving forward always.

Diandra: Having started in your grandmother’s choir, what has your grandmother advised you in becoming a performer?

Malachi: Tough Skin! She told me to always be the soldier. She is a pastor at our church in Toronto. She has said there always going to be devils, but you have to have bought skin and soldier through them.

Diandra: Have they heard the new songs? What is your family’s review?

Malachi: They love it.You know, some of the songs can be raunchy, but they are very supportive. They see it is all fun.
MALACHI – Son Of A Gun

Diandra: Do they blast your music at the reunion?

Malachi: Every time! They always ask me what is next. Every reunion becomes a night of me.  (he laughs)

Diandra: Any jealous cousins?

Malachi: It’s funny because I am the oldest of the cousins. They are kids, and we are 8 years apart. So, you know, through the night, we’ll end up singing my songs or whatever is on the radio like, Lewis Capaldi.

Diandra: Anyone already saying they will follow you?

Malachi: My brother! He’s already learning all the Fortnite dances. Who knows? Maybe, I can take him on tour as a back-up dancer.

Diandra: What is your favorite, childhood memory with music?

Malachi: When I bought my mom Mary J. Blige’s Growing Pains for Christmas. It was 2007, I was 9 years old, and, at the time, my parents had split up and I gave it to her. She was going through a lot, and I really saw the strength and the power that album gave to her. She would listen to it, non-stop, while we were doing chores or going to the mall. I saw the complete, 180 turn around of her listening to these songs of heartbreak and women really going through it. She really gained strength listening to it.

Diandra: What is the most romantic song off the new EP, Right Now?

Malachi: “I Got You” The story of this song is about growing together. It should be about us. It should never be just about me. We are equals, and your life is my life. We should grow together.  We should do life together.
MALACHI – Touch Down

Diandra: What is the most romantic gesture you have ever done?

Malachi: I was 16, andI  took my girlfriend to The Keg, which the nicest place in Toronto. It was Valentine’s Day, and Ipaid for the $300 dollar bill. I got a hotel suite. I put flowers over the bed, and I got her a promise ring, and I said I just want to be with you and I really hope we can make this last.

Diandra: YOU WERE SIXTEEN WHEN YOU DID THIS! I’ve seen weaker marriage proposal. That is elaborate!

Malachi: I am a romantic. (he laughs)

Diandra: Last time I asked you which Pokemon you are most alike, and I want to know, which cartoon do you feel most like now?

Malachi: Goku! DragonballZ! He is always getting stronger and trying to see how he can get better before going off to war.

Diandra: Any virtual tours planned?

Malachi: I thought about that. Get some of my friends, keep a six set distance, and play. I
