Diandra Interviews Ruby Waters: The Quantum Physics of A Good Song

For Ruby Waters, music has been a channel to inner pain; a way to feeling lighter compared to how depressed her brain can get. She is funny, TALENTED, and her ability to lace arrangements and lyrics with a sense other-worldly wonder might be why her latest song is called “Quantum Physics.” In our interview, she discusses how music free her and holds her sweetest, childhood memories.

Diandra: What about your music do you find liberating?

Ruby Waters: I channel a lot of inner pain into my music. (she laughs) Not to sound dramatic! Once I channel some type of pain into a song I become free of that pain. Definitely liberating.
Quantum Physics Acoustic – Ruby Waters

Diandra: Describe a moment when you felt one of your songs healed you?

Ruby Waters: Sweet sublime is a hella special track, and it was our first baby to drop. The last few times I played live; it was absolutely incredible to hear all the people who were singing along with me. It was magical and, I guess, I could say healing: a feeling like no other, really.

Diandra: What is the sweetest piece of wisdom you have learned from a track, and what song was it?

Ruby Waters: ”Ya cant always get what ya want”. Rolling Stones. Self Explanatory.

Diandra: What was the inspiration behind Quantum Physics, and how did you feel the title captured its emotion/ message?

Ruby Waters:No one seems to be rushing into relationships anymore. It’s a lot more common, nowadays, to test the waters before settling down with someone. However, you never know who’s gonna come into your life and take you by surprise. Sometimes, “testing the waters” can be complex as heck, and can leave you more heartbroken and emotional than an actual relationship because our brains fill the voids and try to envision the potential. Quantum Physics was inspired by testing the waters, getting swept off my feet, being too afraid to commit, and wishing I had gotten the chance to taste the potential.
Rabbit Hole – Ruby Waters

Diandra: What is a fact about quantum physics that fascinates you?

Ruby Waters: I’m fascinated by instruments, and quantum physics was the first track I ever wrote on a classical guitar so that’s pretty tight.

Diandra: Known for your evocative lyricism, what is one lyric of yours that you are most proud of poetically?

Ruby Waters: I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m the most proud of it or anything, but the flow and lyric in verse two of “Supernatural”: “Coke or Pepsi, rum or gin, lemon or lime, naughty or nice” really tickles my fancy.

Diandra: What is a fact about quantum physics that fascinates you?

Ruby Waters: My favorite family memory with music is the overall experience of seeing my mom and dad play together live. I love it when my sisters start line dancing, and, whenever my dad rips a guitar solo, my mom always gazes at him with the most adoring eyes. It’s like they go back in time when they play. Lol it sounds like a movie. Truly priceless to me.

Diandra: You have described your writing process as multiple brains coming together. If you could give each of your multiple brains a name and three qualities what would they be?

Ruby Waters: There is a Japanese proverb that says you have three faces. One you show to the world, one you show to friends and family, and one that you only show to yourself; consider this with brains writing songs instead of faces (she laughs). The brain I show to the world writes with conscious effort to make people feel better and be happy. The brain for family and friends is the playful brain that likes to keep the music interesting but true to myself. The last brain is depressed as fuck and likes to write about sadness pain and shit (she laughs). When they come together it works.

Diandra: What has your own growth as an artist made clearer to you about who you are as a person?

Ruby Waters: I have learned so much honestly. Mostly I’ve just learned about who I really am, and what I truly value in life.

Diandra: What is the title of your upcoming EP, and how do you feel it most embodies who you are at the moment?

Ruby Waters: The new EP is called “If It Comes Down To It”. I don’t think it embodies me really as much as it embodies itself. The collection of tunes on this record play strong and cut deep.
