Diandra Interviews Seba Kaapstad- A Global Spirit
I loved Seba Kaapstad’s record, Thina, and, luckily after this interview, I got to know their heart, as well. When you are a person seeking to connect on a human level, your art becomes more than creative expression. It becomes a spiritual voice, of which Seba Kaapstad’s global sound can, easily, be described as soulful. Interviewing one of their lead singers, Zoe, I learned this band is strong, clear, and ready to be heard.
Diandra: You have been described as a global sound. How would you define yourselves as global in person and style?
Zoe: When something is global it relates to the whole world and there’s nothing that brings us to that more than the similarity in our human experiences. The stories we tell inform who we are and the natural flair or style we bring to the table.
Diandra: How has creating your artistic vision changed since signing with a label?
Zoe: The beauty of our vision was that it was able to compliment the labels ethos. We presented ourselves and matched. Thankfully, this did not take away from what we already have as a band. If anything, this allows us to to further our perspective in growing our sound and relating it with more ears. Sharing experiences with people as they gravitate to what we offer.

Diandra: Your songs have a relieving effect; as if to dance is to destress. How has being an artist helped you de-stress from life?
Zoe: Being an artist is reflecting life. This is being stressed and being de – stressed. Music is a therapy that many don’t think about and thankfully we get to be a part of that world.
Diandra: Name a moment when music seemed to heal you?
Zoe: Today, listening to Miriam Makeba’s “Milele”…a really healing moment.
Diandra: Life is an ebb and flow of experiences. What experiences have molded you as artists? Name a few.
Zoe: The music business is always a learning curve that has a lot to do with music but involves all the “nitty grittys” one can overlook while creating anything. i.e. admin, meetings, brainstorming ideas on product, clients etc
Meeting people I admire is also a moulding thing, it feels although I am taking a leaf from their branch.Meetings the late Bra Hugh in high school was cosmic, meeting Salif Keita at the South African joy of Jazz was epic! Those are things that can’t not mold you.
Everyday life has a molding thing, because nothing happens quite the same and this opens a whole new world of experiences to be shape shifted by.
Diandra: You have been together since 2013. What are the biggest strides or growths you have witnessed within each other as a band?
Zoe: Our writing has become more and more telepathic, and we resolve creative challenges or differences with a lot of foresight for a solution.
