Diandra Interviews Super City: Getting High Off Sound
With their newest single “High” being a push forward in style and sound for Super City, I interviewed the band on how they have grown together and how music grows the world.
Diandra: Having known each other since high-school. How do you think you each have changed and stayed the same?
Super City: We’ve become much more open to a lot of different musics and that’s made us grow at a faster rate. Our high school selves would not be down to do choreography or even sing. We started just being obsessed with guitar and our relationship was getting together and playing instrumental stuff.
Diandra: You have said the hardest part about being in a band is getting along, but you actually do. What do you most like about each other as artists?
Super City: It’s really easy to bounce ideas off of each other and everyone’s down to take risks.
Diandra: You have said dance is an integral part of this world. How do you feel moving a body enriches a person’s mind and soul?
Super City: When you can get a room full of people to do the same thing sometimes it’s bad but sometimes it’s pointless and fun. Dance is a celebration of both individuality and the power of the collective. A lot of bands had choreography back in the day. We were watching videos of bands with great moves and we wanted that to be apart of what we are doing.
Diandra: What was the inspiration behind and core message to “High”?
Super City: Dan had all the music written and once he told us the concept of a kid trying weed for the first time, Greg came up with the lyrics really quickly.
Diandra; How do you feel it represents and alludes to where you are going as artists in upcoming music?
Super City: “High” is a good representation of what we do. It’s a song that has all the things we like: heavy guitar riffs, pretty harmonies, electronic beats, synthesizers.
Super City – Sanctuary (Official Video)
Diandra: Sanctuary was about human connection, and trying to find refuge in yourself and the ones you love. What has music taught you about love and human connection?
Super City: As Lil Nas X has shown us, one song can light up the cultural heartbeat for an entire nation.
Diandra: Bouncing off that question, what personal qualities do you believe your music has bettered or elaborated about you?
Super City: It takes a lot of work to express something you want to express in a format as complex as music. So training yourself in doing that can help in other facets of life if you apply the mentality you use in the striving for that goal.
Diandra: With your last album being called Sanctuary, what are the things/ people/ places that make you safe enough to be yourself?
Super City: The act of playing or working on music has always been a place we can spend time when we need or want to. It’s a great way to work things out personally and professionally at the same time.
Diandra: If you could describe your music as a sanctuary, how do you hope it keeps and heals people?
Super City: We hope that our music is a fun environment that also challenges and moves people.
