Diandra Reviews Entertainment News: Planned Parenthood Is Getting Its Musical Support

The Trump Presidency is striking fear amongst many. The President-elect did not win because he was known for kindness, compassion, and love, especially for women’s health. Planned Parenthood, immediately, soared amongst activists’ minds as a leading provider/ advocate of women, men, and young people’s health and sex education that would be threatened by this administration. After all, if you win according to what you hate and dislike, it means your actions will reflect the same. With approximately 700 health centers across the country, artists as the purveyors of music, are uniting to protect Planned Parenthood as a purveyor of health and knowledge to people that might not have access or confidence enough to ask, “How do I take care of my body or how does this thing work?”.
On January 18 and 19, musical benefits will be held at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Rough Trade NYC  to show care, compassion, and respect for an organization that has maintained the same in giving people health information. Backed by The ACLU. which has for 100 years been a legal defender of both people’s civil and human rights, the night contains thoughtful and unique artists like, Kevin Morby, Sharon Van Etten, and Beirut. Yet, if you cannot make it to see these amazing acts, you can support Planned Parenthood by joining the auction for Ty Segall’s Manipulator LP, of which all proceeds go to the organization. Ty Segall is know for a sound that strips reality, as we know it, to reveal its multi-layers as a social, spiritual, and sonic sphere. His blend of dream pop/ folk rock exudes his search for clarity and understanding of a world that has so many layers to offer, but is obsessed with confining itself to being less and labeled.  Moreover, Bleached has released acoustic covers of  The Ramones’ “Bonzo Goes To Bitburg” and Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction”, with proceeds also going to Planned Parenthood.

“After the election, I went to the desert with an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, sadness, and anger. I decided to record covers of 2 songs that perfectly capture my feelings regarding our political state. ‘Eve of Destruction’ was written in 1965, and 50 years later could not be more relevant. It’s a warning of the fascist, racist, violent and unjust world we were living in then, and are living in now. ‘Bonzo Goes To Bitburg’ shares the embarrassed, offended, and disgusted feeling a lot of us have every time we see Trump on our television. We are living in a time where we can anticipate federal funding to public health resources terminated. I have been using Planned Parenthood’s services for 10 years. And hope to continue to. It is on us to ensure their services continue through public funding and donation. All the proceeds of this digital 7” will go towards Planned Parenthood, for a future of accessible pap smears, breast and cervical cancer screening, pregnancy testing, pregnancy option counseling, STD screening, colposcopies, birth control, sex education, LGBT services, and other necessary health services.- Jennifer Clavin (Bleached)
