Diandra Interviews thisisNAMASTE: Life Truly Is Something

From Denzel Washington to Spice Girls, thisisNAMASTE has a range of influences, but the biggest one has been her life. Like most artists, she has seen that there is a certain authenticity, sparked by empathy, that comes from experiencing love rather than just writing about it. In our interview, she discusses the deal-breakers and anxieties of being a person in love and an artist in business.

Diandra: You have said one of your childhood memories with music is watching the Spice Girls. So I have to ask, if you could invent yourself as a Spice Girl, what would be your name and style?

thisisNAMASTE: Oooh what a great question! I reckon I’d be something like “Tartan Spice” and I’d rock various, sick tartan outfits!

Diandra: You have said, especially as a woman, it can feel hard to be heard and empowered in the music industry. Who are the artists that empower you, not just as singers but also industry women?

thisisNAMASTE: So many strong amazing women inspire me in this industry. Lady Gaga, for one, I think is a phenomenal artist, songwriter and business woman. Beyoncé, Sia, Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, the list goes on.

Diandra: You have discussed your struggles with anxiety, which is so common. Do you feel that anxiety is a natural part of life or a byproduct from how society/ the industry maneuver?

thisisNAMASTE: I think it is definitely a bit of both. I think its natural for people to suffer with anxiety in their lives at some point but obviously some people suffer with it to different degrees. Living in a world now, with so much social media, is hard as there is so much “perfect” content out there to compare yourself to. On the other hand, the music industry is definitely an anxiety heightening industry for sure; there is a lot of rejection and scrutiny and you are putting stuff out into the world for people to openly judge. So it can bring its own array of anxieties.

Diandra: What are a few things you have learned about yourself and what it means to be with people during isolation?

thisisNAMASTE: I think the main thing I’ve learned, and being actively trying to practice far more, is gratitude. Ultimately, when the world shut down, there was nothing I valued more than my boyfriend, friends and family, and the hope that they would all stay safe and healthy. I also learned that I’m really good at binge watching Netflix shows and eating and drinking ALOT!!

Diandra: Singing to relationships, what is the best advice your own music has given you in terms of falling in love and dealing with a break-up?

thisisNAMASTE: The best advice I’d say I’ve taken from my own music, as far as dealing with a breakup, is to try and remember that you will be okay and will get through this. Its just a small bump in the road and you have so much good ahead of you. As far as falling in love, I think the best advice I’ve taken is to really try and appreciate how wonderful a feeling it is to love and be loved.

Diandra: In seeing your relationships through songs, what have you noticed is your deal-breaker and something you always do when in love?

thisisNAMASTE: I think the deal breakers for me, as far as breakdowns of relationships, have been lack of respect and trust. When I’m in love I always like to be a team player. I see a relationship as having a partner you can grow with. You can help and support each other and encourage each other to be the best versions of yourselves and I love that.

Diandra: You started songwriting when you were 11. What are the differences and similarities you notice between your writing back then and now, especially in terms of the feelings you sing to?

thisisNAMASTE: I hope one of the differences is that I write better songs now haha!! I guess when I was younger, I would try and write love songs before ever actually experiencing love; so there is definitely an element of life growth that has added more meaning around lyrics now. Similarities though, I always wrote about things real to me; things going on in my life or going on around me and I still very much do that now.

Diandra: What is your favorite movie, and which character would you be from it? Why?

thisisNAMASTE: I have been told in the past that I don’t have the best taste in films, I love Disney, rom-coms and cheesy action movies and pretty much anything with Denzel Washington in it !! (Haha) So with that being said I LOVE the film Deja Vu. Character wise, I’d create a new character and be Denzel’s female sidekick and we’d workout what happened even quicker!

Diandra: With your music being about rebuilding one’s heart, what are the qualities about yourself you most appreciate and want to build further?

thisisNAMASTE: I’d say the main thing I appreciate in myself is the ability to be resilient in lots of situations.

Diandra: What are the things you do to “namaste”?

thisisNAMASTE: Yoga! (Cliche I know) and I workout 3/4 times a week which helps clear my mind.
