Diandra Interviews Ziggy Alberts: Finding Your Heartbeat
Finding your purpose in life feels EPIC, but for Ziggy Alberts’ purpose is found in the things that give you meaning like, making good song or fighting for an environmental cause. He is determined to live a life of love and adventure, and, in our interview, he discusses how music helps him do so.
Diandra: What makes your heart beat?
Ziggy: Surfing, writing songs, time with loved ones, adventures, meditation, and touring!
Diandra: What has others love helped you heal about yourself?
Ziggy: So many things, but, in particular, it has helped me be more comfortable within my own headspace.
Diandra: There are those who believe love can heal the world. How do you feel music plays a role in making that true?
Ziggy: I think music is a great medium for hope and change; through loving intention, people can open up to new ideas and shift out of patterns. I try to sing with as much love as possible: on stage and in studio. When we are all together, singing in unison, there is some incredible things that can happen.
Diandra: What is your favorite busking memory?
Ziggy: I’ve got too many to pick a favorite – but, one that comes to mind, is one evening a light rain started, and my music gear was half undercover/ half exposed. I kept playing as it started raining and a bunch of people ran out of the restaurant and danced on the street in the rain with me. Completely spontaneous and absolutely magical.
Diandra: What are the ways you think 2020 has permanently changed the music industry? For better or worse?
Ziggy: I don’t think there is any permanent change – but there has been a big shift towards online concerts. I think it is a double-edged sword; it is great to reach people who wouldn’t have otherwise had the chance to see the concert, but it can never replace the true healing power of unity that comes from being physically all together in concert.
Diandra: Music is a signal for personal growth. What are the aspects of you it has shown you as grown and the parts of you it has revealed never change?
Ziggy: This is an interesting question – I grew out of being a homebody, as a child, to being a full-time traveller living in my van. That was quite a big shift. The part of me that has never changed is how much I love people: I’m a people’s person. Even with a public profile, that hasn’t changed. I love humans!
Diandra: If you could describe your song style like an environment, from lyrics to melody, how would you do so?
Ziggy: dolphins getting barreled basically says it all (haha)
Diandra: Singing to a need for environmental justice, what is a recent story that broke your heart versus one that gave you hope?
Ziggy: It breaks my heart seeing the lack of accountability to some companies being responsible for recent oil spills around the world – they cost both the environment and people so much, yet the companies responsible for the damage seem to continue with business as usual. That needs to change.
The Fight For The Bight campaign here in Australia was incredible: it was led by a big surf community as an international protest against an oil drilling project in the most volatile part of Australian waters. The company withdrew due to public pressure even with initial government approvals. That was massive!
Diandra: If you could turn a movie or tv show into a concept album, which would it be and why? What angle or core message would you take?
Ziggy: Right now, it would be Westworld. I’ve only watched a couple episodes, but it is a chilling representation of so many truths of our current state of living. It’d be a folk / western album, and the overarching message would be for humanity to go deeper into spirituality and love, instead of technology, because we are losing what is awesome about being human the more technology takes precedent.
Diandra: If you could turn your favorite album into a movie, which would it be, why, and what would be its premise?
Ziggy: It would be Every Kingdom by Ben Howard. It would be a beautiful story of having adventures with friends. There would be no plot twist where anything goes wrong, and you would be left with total good vibes.
Diandra: Your music is often defined as honest. What is a universal truth about you have discovered through your music?
Ziggy: That the intention you sing with is far more powerful than the words through which they are sung. Mean what you say, and people will feel it.
Diandra: How do you feel your newest album represents who you are today, and what emotions do you expect people to find within it?
Ziggy: I think it is a fairly accurate record of my personal search for freedom. I think that it will move people, and I hope they will feel inspired to break out of the typical narrative and prioritize each of their pursuits for a meaningful life filled with love and purpose.
