Diandra Interviews NJ: Find Your “Mango” For Empowerment

Whether it is relationships or songs, we all have to find our “mango:”the sweet, ripened fruit of our bond that make is feel like we are rich juice flowing out all the good emotions. For NJ, she found her “mango” or niche in discussing female empowerment by understanding that, sometimes, you go to let the “man-go.” Singing to women trying to build themselves through who they love rather than feeling torn by them, in our interview, we discuss her journey to empowerment.

Diandra: What is the story behind “Mango?” What inspired the track?

NJ: Let that man go! Female empowerment is one of my favorite things to write about and being able to turn that topic into a catchy hook for people to listen and relate makes me love it even more.

Diandra: If you could describe your personality like a Mango, how would you do so?

NJ: I would say I’m sweet but with hints of a sour kick, like a mango. I care for others with my whole heart, and I take care of everyone around me. If someone betrays them or myself, that’s where the sour kick comes from.

Diandra: What have the women in your life taught you about female empowerment versus the men?

NJ: Women have the power to do anything they want and they can do it just as good as a man, or better. I’ve been raised to believe that I’m gonna do whatever I put my mind to. My manager Tori really is proof that women will also change the music industry.

Diandra: Who is a woman you really admire in terms of confidence? why?

NJ: Taylor Swift has forever made an impact in the industry when it comes to female empowerment, she really is the queen. I love to write breakup songs cause I feel like, when you go through something difficult, listening and singing along to a song that lifts you up can be so impactful.

Diandra: What are the themes of Platinum, and how did you feel that title matched them?

NJ: Platinum is all about knowing your self worth and knowing you don’t need anyone else to be complete. I feel the title matches the theme of the EP because the song is about liking someone but realizing that you shouldn’t settle just to be in a relationship. Being single shouldn’t be looked at as a bad thing.

Diandra: What is a truth or relationship behavior you learned in this EP?

NJ: In the song “Platinum” I wrote about the lessons I learned while being in a toxic relationship, including the fact that I’m worth much more than how I was treated. A lot of people settle when it comes to relationships just to be in one, but it’s not worth losing yourself when it’s not the right person.

Diandra; Being the EP drops on Valentine’s Day, describe your first crush?

NJ: When I was in kindergarten i had a “boyfriend” and I just remember he tried to kiss me one time and I rejected him. I thought he was cool but I knew I was cooler (haha).

Diandra; Are you a romantic and, if so, what is the most romantic thing you have done or have had done for you?

NJ: I definitely am! My current boyfriend always does super sweet things for me, but something that has a lot of meaning is the fact that we write each other love letters and hide them for each other to find.

Diandra: What is a movie you would turn into a concept album? Why and from what character perceptive?

NJ: The Notebook would be a super cool album concept to make. All the twists and turns in their love story would make such interesting songs. I’d write it from both of their perspectives.

Diandra: What is an album you would turn into a film? Who would you cast as the leads and what would be its premise?

NJ: I think I would turn 1989 by Taylor Swift into a film because it would be a super fun story about a girl living in New York City that falls in love with someone but ends up getting her heart broken and choosing herself in the end. I’d cast Olivia Rodrigo as the main character because I think she would execute it the best.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?

NJ: My grandparents bought me a karaoke machine with a real microphone and everything when I was around the age of 5, and I would always blast karaoke songs and sing in my room for hours.

Diandra: Being it is a new year, what did you start or learn in 2020 that you hope to grow in 2021?

NJ: I learned that quality over quantity when it comes to a friendship is so much more important. I used to care so much about who liked me and how many friend.
