Album Review: Jessie J Is The R.O.S.E We Need Right Now

Jessie J is one of the most powerful voices out there. After slaying a Chinese Singing competition, because why not?, the songstress released R.O.S.E. The album is her most exceptional yet because it brims with what she is good at: vulnerable pop.

Yes, vulnerable pop is not, exactly, a genre, but with pop-anthems like “Flashlight’ behind her, Jessie J knows how to take your feelings of being “done” with life and revive them with hope and bombastic beats. “Real Deal”, “Dopamine”, and “Petty” are like formal declarations stating, “I am not having this S**T, anymore!” Whether it be a Trump tweet or an ex’s text, Jessie J is over being “over”. From “Dangerous” to “Someone’s Lady”, Jessie J wants to confront the hate in her life, even the one she gives herself by choosing lesser men to be with her: a “Queen”.
Jessie J – Queen

Ladies, self-empowerment is in every edge of this record. First, the beats are filled with heavy baselines and “Michael Jackson-esque” symphonies that even even have Jessie J doing her own carnal, vocal riffs. “Think About That”, “Play With You”, and “I Believe In You” are just a few of the “tour de forces” that have Jessie J both playful and romantic with her voice. It is as if, now more than ever, she has recognized she can do and be whomever she wants as an artist. While “mainstream pop” can get a “bad rap”, these are the songs we sing with our friends, when we need a spiritual “pick-me-up”, or simply want to feel like we are stars. Jessie J understands that.
Jessie J – Think About That

When I say vulnerable pop, I really mean thoughtful. R.O.S.E is pop hit after pop hit, but is one that screams “This is Jessie J”; a strong, confident woman with a voice that can belt feelings. Moreover, one that can show being in your worst situation does not mean becoming your worst self. For More Information On Jessie J Click Here.
