Concert Review: Kali Uchis Gave Selena Vibes At Bowery Ballroom

Kali Uchis was giving Selena vibes in her Bowery Ballroom show, and left hearts singing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” with her bridging of American and Latin culture. Wearing a vibrantly shimmered, red dress, that made her look like Sultry Christmas, the rising songstress brought Spanglish Pop to the glee of NYC! Moreover, she hailed a crowd that appreciates the fabulosity of being a pop star.

There I was watching Kali Uchis debate over who would receive her towel, of which she gently dabbed her brow after every song. Frankly, I have never seen a crowd of human beings want someone’s sweat-towel so much. They roared and cheered until it was tossed; with the other 99% percent, who failed to grab it, uttering a genuinely sad, “Awwww!”. Uchis was calling back to the glamor of pop that makes a star almost devouring in sound and style. She sways her body like a ballerina stuck on a permanent loop of elegance, of which made her redefine sexy as confident. Moreover, she approached the stage like it was her living room; as if it was the space she goes to for comfort and thought. There she marveled at how, a few years back, her desire to do music was born, of which she taught herself and eventually ended up on a sold-out run in NYC. Of course, her tale could be an example of the “magic” of time, but it is also an example of fate. While so many have their desires born from childhood, sometimes, our greatest passions are born later; after teenaged pangs and young adult woes. Realizing her path as a young adult, may be why so many of her romantic songs are about the many men that think and try to dominate a fierce woman.
Kali Uchis – Tyrant ft. Jorja Smith

Tracks like “Tyrant”, “Sycamore Tree”, and “What They Say” were the twisted love letters you write to men that think dominating a woman, rather than joining her on her rise, is a righteous path. Even Uchis newest, unreleased track repeated the verse “You’re A Killer” with this note of sweetened toxicity. Uchis’ voice is like a cherry lollipop melting over synths and keys that, for however hardened by a baseline, still feel like a candy. She approaches lyrics as if she is the balm, but they are the lips; she can only gently coat their worth as they kiss you, which they did in tracks “Nuestra Planeta”, “Know What I Want”, and “Ridin Round”. She succulently delivers the ultimate irony that women/ human beings  must face for their empowerment; you do not need to change who you are to receive love, but, when it is given, it certainly changes your person. For More Information On Kali Uchis Click Here.
