Artist Close-Up: Lucette Invites You To A Deluxe Hotel Room
“Sophomore Slump” is a music myth that could have some validity. We work so hard to take “the first step” that walking the path after is not even a thought. In essence, you want to get to the race while forgetting it is, by all means, a marathon. Such a dynamic is contemplated by Lucette, whose newest record is dedicated to the many struggles, as a woman, she has had to face in choosing music as a career.
Every woman has a dream, so powerful, that we forget we are women having a dream. Of course, this is natural because our humanity is natural, especially to us. Yet, in trying to make that dream come true, each step feels like a lessoned reminder that the same privileges men have to hold and prosper their ambition are not afforded to us ladies. Thus, Deluxe Hotel Room comes off like a stunning warning and solid companion for women who have or will go through the same prejudices. The sad part is you are never “the first” and, tragically, you won’t be the last.
MoMA PS1 Warm Up 2017 Season Highlights
For the album, Lucette worked with Grammy- Winning artist/ producer Sturgill Sampson to create a record as beautiful, raw, and even seedy as the gorgeous rooms where men betrayed her trust. Brooding drum-machine beats, luminous synth lines, and the striking, soulful saxophone work of New Orleans musician Brad Walker, hues every room/ story Lucette builds. Vocally, she is very narrative; describing her lyrics as much as singing them. It is as if utter a verse is to relive a lifetime ago, which allows her to paint worlds through her singing. The result is a record that feels more than music because it is her story. For More Information On Lucette Click Here.
