Concert Review: Psymon Spine Is A Halloween Trend At Alphaville

I never go to see an artist that I do not hear before. I need to like you to know if you are worth loving. Call it a form of sonic dating. Immediately after hearing ¨Jumprope,¨ I knew I wanted to date Psymon Spine, and what better first date than Alphaville during Halloween week.

If TikTok was a concert, it would be Psymon Spine at Alphaville: fun, poppy, colorful, and just enough so to make you want to choreograph a trending dance. Often, New York´s concert scene can feel divided: between the beat poets singing to a world that needs the rest and the beat producers that try to hype you enough to forget the word. Yet, Halloween is special to New York: every young adult approaches it like they are still little kids but now they can buy their own candy. Psymon Spine feel like a transient elevation of taking ownership of yourself: kind of embodying the enamoring nature of scrolling through our reds and analyzing our personal influence.

IDK if they would find being called the concert equivalent of TikTok flattering, but I mean it is the highest honor. We all have indulged and dived in to the various flashes of content when we feared or wondered what our own ¨influence¨ would look like. Led by singer  Sabine Holler and a trio of ¨Boys,¨  Noah Prebish, Peter Spears, and Brother Michael Rudinski, the group comes off like ´psychedelic splashes of varying videos: each showing a new side of humanity and its search to make a statement and stamp on viewers. The result is a show that feels pretty brisk, and the road ahead for a band that can give future Sylvan Esso or Tennis vibes.

From Parcels to Jungle, the groovy band that makes you jig is having its moment. Sure, we live in a sonic soundscape founded on bedroom synth waves and a concept of chill. Yet, I wrote it in my Hives review and I say it with Psymon Dance. Nostalgia is returning in music, and people want to dance like they are big kids. No more swaying and full on karaoke sing-alongs will be joining peoples desire to move in a world that still feels oddly stuck in 2020. Psymon Spine provides the outlet.
