Concert Review: The Shook Twins Leave Rockwood Shook With Their Show
Shook Twins showed that life is a happy mystery at Rockwood Music Hall. Their music is a blend between bright keys (shout out to xylophones!) and a a subtle down-tempo that does not clash, but, instead elevates a child-like vibe to their music. They are like a The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper meets Joni Mitchell; approaching the magic of life’s ups and downs for the beauty they can add to one’s spirit.
It is hard to believe that sadness strengthens or that laughs persevere. It is not easy to fathom rejections are guidebooks to future yeses and that acceptance is the key to inner stability. Yet, the Shook Twins write music to bond the relationships between things you never knew were related like, your heart and your perspective. With banjos, tambourines, electric guitars, and nearly every instrument ues to lead a parade down Happy Street, their music felt like vibrant-folk; joyous folk tracks meant to touch your soul, lighten it up, and tell it that its okay to think big. Sure, they may be approaching life’s bigger questions in“Wantlove” and”Mad Scientist”, but when the twins combine their voices they become one, hypnotic smokehouse. Although they are powerfully transcendent, they are not a powerhouse… they are a smokehouse. They sing their songs as if they are the looming fog entering a village full of lives that could only be known through their music. Each chord is a window and each key is a door their voices tap to tell your heart, “Hey, can I come in?”. They enrapture you with their smiles and their bond with each other. Admittedly, I left Rockwood wishing I had a twin that was as talented and knew me as well as Katelyn and Laurie Shook know and balance each other. In perspective, what a life to live! Traveling the world singing music with the person that has LITERALLY been with you since the womb!
It was no wonder the songs and stories made them appear like one entity moving and serenading the other like a crystal on a chain; meant to swing over crowd eyes and make them feel love. Yet, the Shook twins go beyond love of a lover to love of a life, your own. What if the bad times were just details that lead to happier endings? What if the insanity of this world was just footnotes to greater, kinder compositions? Again, I know its hard to believe that, but the Shook Twins’ concert is one to show believing in the better is easy if you simply start. For More Information On The Shook Twins Click Here.
