Song Review: Lorde Gives The “Green Light” To Life

It is kind of amazing to see Lorde be so in tune with what it is to be young, when she has so much money and stardom. I know that may not seem relevant, but while most Millennials are struggling to find ways to make rent, Lorde is dominating in fame and fortune, which are two things the can distract someone from their humanity. Yet, as she returns from one of the greatest debuts for an artist, she shows through Green Light that materialism cannot ease the vibrancy and volatility of being young.

Lorde – Green Light

As Lorde  builds her excitement and bliss over that magical moment when she gets the “Green Light” had has her bags packed to go, despite ambiguity, every listener understand what she means. Whether it is to leave a relationship or run to it, we have all had a thought where we internally agree that if life gave us the opportunity we would be with “that person”, we do “that career”, or go off on “that adventure”. In essence, Lorde makes “Green Light” the overarching symbol for every situation where we said to life “If you say yes, then I am all in!”. With a twinkling piano melody that bounces into each pressed synth,  Green Light is a track for both the club, and those private moments when you blast your favorite song on your headphones and dance as if no one is looking. It truly reinvigorates you, and ups Lorde’s previous penchant for social commentary, with Pure Heroine, into spiritual analysis.

There are definitely hints in Green Light that Lorde has grown up. She is not remarking on her lack of being “royal” anymore, and instead is marveling at her desire to feel royal. As she smartly plays with her smoky voice to match the rising and falling beats/emotions, Lorde shows that we all are waiting for the Green Light to go and live life, especially our love life, more fully.
