Song Review: Raj And The 100’s Say “No Suicide”
If you have seen my 13 Reasons Why review, you know that suicide is one of the most important, undiscussed topics/ causes of death in America. Why people choose to withdraw themselves, literally, from earth is mind-boggling? Honestly, Raj And The 100’s new song “No Suicide” should be apart of the show’s future soundtrack. Bringing in a quiet, pensiveness to this very reflective topic/ Netflix Series, “No Suicide” is the rare song because it approaches Death for what it is: and earthly exit.
It makes sense that Raj Sabhlok, the mastermind behind Raj and the 100’s, would write a song that sees the expansiveness of life by acknowledging its end. It is, sincerely, easy to forget this “ride” has a final stop, especially when we have moments when we wish we could get off the “rollercoaster” of living. Yet, following the sudden passing of his parents, Raj traded his house for a small RV and left his hometown to hit the roads of the United States, in a way, that would rival a great, Americana novel like, “On The Road”. Fo two years, he wrote hundreds of songs, explored, the wilderness, and discovered the productivity of creativity lies in inner peace. Recruiting musicians that shared his mind-set or , at least, were willing to join the spiritual search, he formed The 100’s. And they sound GOOD!
“No Suicide” is psychedelic-rock for those undergoing the difficulties of subjects such as, loss, longing, separation, growing older, falling in love and rebellion. These are vast topics, but they connect under the veil of life and death, and the keys and chords that whirl through this song like Death’s scythe. Still, although this may make the song appear melancholic, it is actually perseverant. The folkish lyricism of his upcoming album, One of the Oldest Men Who Ever Lived, match sentimentality with genuine, universal observance. It is like a Burning Man for your ears.
