Concert Review: Stolar Turns Rockwood NYC Into His Bedroom Pop Chamber
We have all gone into a room, and thought everyone is fake. Swimming in our egos, we searched for genuine, spiritual connections and wondered what were the private worlds behind these public faces. In some ways, these instances are the “bread and butter” of Stolar’s appeal at Rockwood NYC.
Stolar wants to talk about taboo topics like, drugs, religion, politics, and the general struggle to keep soulfully and mentally cleared when you have no idea who you are. How much of us is inherited by familial, cultural, and societal norms, and how much of us is “us” became a question that launched Stolar’s music self-search. Surrounded by ferns he had been growing for years, his tracks were raw dives into growing and giving life to others, but struggling to feel alive as you do.
From “Erase You” to “Suburbia,” his music arrangements felt like like lollipops of cherry, truth serum; each beat equating another lick into a layer of honesty. DO NOT GET IT TWISTED! Stolar’s sound was very up-tempo and rhythmic, but coolly paced to make you feel like you were laying out in a beach under the shade of a palm tree. While you may have wanted to shake you hips, his songs invited you to also give your heart a break. Moreover, his voice had a falsetto MADE to sing to the truth; carrying in every high breathe words that stopped you from giving up on yourself.
From Yungblud to Wet, it does not matter the degrees as much as the purpose of your music. Now more than ever, artists are flocking to the notion of “figuring yourself out” when conflicted by a world you do not understand. Of course, not every artist can aim for deep, insightful tracks because it takes a certain person to make mostly avoided topics feel casual. Yet, Stolar is such an eager, jovial performer. He could not stop sharing his heart and stories to the packed room, but that is why people liked him; if you wish for the world to be more open then be the first to open up.
