Concert Review: Yumi Zouma Prove They are the FRIENDS of Dream-Pop At LPR

Yumi Zouma played LPR, and proved that they are the FRIENDS of electro/dream-pop. As they splashed around the stage like they were in the series iconic, fountain opener, I felt as warm as a “cup of Joe” at Central Perk. The New Zealand showed that when you like what you do, and the people you do it with; chemistry becomes infectious.Yumi Zouma – Half Hour (Official Video)

There is an ambiguous, but felt attraction to someone who is having a good time. When we see happy person, we can often look at them in wonder like, “Huh? How did you get that way?”. This may sound facetious, but it is true; joy catches us off guard, but it captivates our attention. Playing classics like, “Alena”, “December”, and “Keep Close To Me” amongst their newest songs from Willowbank, the night felt hued by pastels. The “dance” portion of Yumi Zouma’s sound leaped in their live show and into the hypnotic sways of audience members whom were eager to gulp Christine Simpson’s vocals like they were made from vanilla shakes and sweet cherries. There is nothing forced, frazzled, or frayed about her voice. Her vocals are pure softness like a childhood teddy bear you clutch to remember home. That “homey” feeling was amped by their Willowbank songs such as, “Barricade (Matter of Fact)” , “Other People”, and “Carnation” which were written with the idea of going back to your family and childhood origins to feel refreshed again. Hence, it was no surprise that the audience would end up jumping on stage and laughing with Yumi Zouma like they were apart of the group since conception.

To bring it back to my “FRIENDS” reference, there is something welcoming to Yumi Zouma’s presence that makes you feel like you are apart of it. Each member has an emanating, distinct personality that makes them appear like a fave character you pull for, and draws you into their show like an avid, weekly follower. Thus, you can always recognize when fans have a genuine, positive love for artists, and as Simpson sang surrounded by young faces and cheering beers, I felt the love. The moment was a fantastic emblem to what Yumi Zouma is all about: comforting joy. Sure finding safety in happiness is not easy, but it does exist, especially in their music.
