Album Review: Arcade Fire Bring Joy In Everything Now

Arcade Fire’s Everything Now feels like an explosion of joy occurred in my ears, and is unlike anything the band has released before. Arcade Fire is known for their willingness to muddles and push the boundaries of sound so that their rhythms feels as emotional as their lyrics. Thus, to hear them have such a “happy back-drop” can throw off fans, initially, but will leave them dancing, eventually.

Yes, Arcade Fire will make you dance. I never thought I’d say that. Yet, if Arcade Fire announces that every song of Everything Now was actually an ABBA demo they discovered in a golden treasure chest in Scandinavia, I would believe it. While Arcade Fire keeps their nuance for melancholy in their lyrics, there music is synth-wave after synth-wave of electro-pop. Funkadelic chords, tropical-esque keys, and basslines drop through songs, “Signs Of Life”, “Peter Pan”, and “Chemsitry” like a grocery bag overflowing with fruit. I, literally, can put on a sequined jumpsuit and roller derby through songs such as “Good God Damn” and “We Don’t Deserve Love” because they feel like an 80’s computer has gone haywire spiraling electricity. They blend vibrant, eclectic sounds that either windily clash into each other or hug like sycophants. Yet, through all the sound, are lyrics that still discuss what it is like to be on the very edge of your life. In some ways, “Creature Comfort” and “Infinite Content” most encompass the vibes of this album. As all these plush, playful noises surround you, as Win Butler smoothly croons lyrics like they are your thoughts.

Whether you want to die or feel like you are life itself, Arcade Fire checkmarks every maddening and enlightening thought that can cast over a human beings. They are poetically fearless and when Win or Kween Régine Chassagne sing, you feel as if they are opening a door into your mind so that every hidden feeling of misery and happiness can tunnel out. Thus, do not be fooled by how greatly joyous their music sounds, their words are the most poignantly reflective verses of what is to exist as a person who want to live.
