Album Review: BENEE “Hey U X” Confirms She Is Awesome

I have long believed in BENEE, in part, because she is so genuine, cool, and kind. Seeing her shows, she is 100% approachable and goofy, which is what people need. Her ability to make joyousness authentic is important, especially with 2021 coming up. People need to remember that being “negative” does not mean being real or honest, and that being nice and open are strong attributes. BENEE”s debut, Hey U X, out November 13, celebrates her ability to create stories with songs that always have a hopeful ending.

Sonically, this album makes you want to grab a pogo-stick and pogo through a field of lilies. Yes, that is a specific image, but the danceability of BENEE is undeniable. From “Same Effect” to “All The Time,” the album feels both easy and rhythmic; letting every beat taps into your heart with gentility and groove. You want to kick, sway, and snap as you hear tracks like, “Plain,” “Snail,” and “Happen To Me.” The sonic amiability of this record makes BENEE appear like your friend singing to her days so as to cheer yours. This is a very important effect.

From Billie Eilish to Conan Gray, or even Ariana Grande, one thing I notice about protective, prominent fandoms is that they treat their “leader/ obsession” like their friend. They talk about them with an intimacy that would make you think Ariana visits them every weekend, and they group text with Conan every day. They know their favorite things and idiosyncrasies, and I could see that happening for BENEE because she exudes a warmth that is approachable, while singing to feeling reproached or rejected. Whether it is “C U” or “Winter,” her mellow, buoyant voice sanguines through lyrics to show that not being accepted by the world, especially people you like, doesn’t have to make you unconfident or unlovable to yourself.

BENEE’s Hey U X brims with optimism, and a feeling that, even at your worst, you don’t have to be down. For all that she sings to wanting to be included or the imagination born from isolation, she continues on trying to make connections with herself and the world because what else can we do? Continue on, people! Life is meant to be lived, and BENEE is LIVING! For More Information On BENEE Click Here.
