Album Review: Boys Noise Makes The Club Scream “Mayday”

Mayday Remixes Pt 1. seems like the perfect title for an album that puts your body in a state of emergency. Boys Noize was not kidding when he made his last name noise. Mayday is a Dubstep’ trap mind -warp that will leave people clawing out of the club from sheer exhaustion/ exhilaration. Why ?Because this is the type of album/music where you shake and quake your body until it feels practically unusable. This may not seem appealing to some, but for many of us, especially the young, we all want a moment or song that pumps our body up as if we’re something that could explode energy like, a supernova. Mayday Remixes Pt. 1 is a sonic supernova.

Although Boys Noize claimed this album brought him back to the basement, unless his basement is in the hottest nightclub in Ibiza, I doubt it. Yet, he does have a point in mustering an underground feeling. Tracks like, Dynamite feat. Benga (Dub Mix) and 2 Live (Boys Noize Silent Remix) make you feel as if you have taken a downward spiral stairs into a cave with strobe lights attached to its natural landscape; giving you both a futuristic and earthly tone. For this Boys Noize uses tweaked and twisted synths that laser through his songs as If you were facing an alien firing squad; his beats shoot at you with force and fastness. The bassline immensity and weight of songs such as, Overthrow (303 Overdub) and Mayday (Club Version), which feel like they should be crunked to. I know what you’re thinking that dance craze ended a long time ago.Its fame may have ended but the moves do not especially in the era of Zumba where people are eagerly seeking a space where they can exert themselves. Again, this may sound like a nightmare for some, but the body is a vessel and should not the vessel be molded and made into strength? Mayday may be the code for when someone is about face their biggest threat, but like a challenge, adrenaline rises through Boys Noize’s music to make you act in the moment rather than your usual overthinking of it.

I can’t say that there’s a theme to Mayday Remixes Pt 1. beyond lose your mind and give your body a chance to shine. Yet I like that. I want an album that makes me feel alive and present to the point where my humanity feels automatic. Using rhythms that feel pressed by titanium machines and then quickly wrapped with a neon colored plastic instrumentals. Entering the digital age of music has left people torn but the point of music is that it makes you feel and Mayday makes me feel like I can dance, kick, and wave my hands forever through the night.
