Album Review: Calum Scott Is Only Human, And That Is Perfect
I was superbly excited about Calum Scott’s debut album: Only Human. After seeing him in concert, and watching how gracious and genuinely grateful he was to fans, I wanted him to succeed. Good people should win at life, and, for Calum Scott, the only way you can be good is if you realize you are only human.
Only Human is unabashedly a pretty album. It was MADE to be heard like, Adele or Sam Smith; when you want to sing along to a beautiful voice and pine over romantic break-ups. Let us be honest; we all have turned on the station known as Sad FM. There melodies drips like rain on a windshield, and lyrics cloud over emotions like grey fog over a once sunny sky. We love to feel like sadness can be beautiful, and heartbreak an odd celebration that we had once loved. Calum Scott delvers such sentiments in tracks like, “If Our Love Is Wrong”, “Come Back Home”, and “What I Miss Most”. You simply want to call Cameron Diaz, and demand she make another romance film with Calum Scott soundtracking.
Calum Scott, Leona Lewis – You Are The Reason (Duet Version)
I ate up Calum’s debut like a woman eating chocolate ice cream after a break-up; it is deliciously sad and cathartic. He goes from the King of Yearning (“Hotel Room” or “Dancing On My Own”) to the Prince of Hope (“Not Dark Yet” or “You Are The Reason”). Yet, most importantly, he always stays in an emotional in-between; never achieveng the love he wants, but also never stopping in desiring it. This “in-between” is what makes his album so humanly appealing, and ready to soundtrack every tv show break-up. How we manage to want love even though we know it ALWAYS leaves is absolutely magical.
Calum Scott – Rhythm Inside
Nothing lasts forever, but the memory of how something, like love, made you feel eternal for a moment is worth both mourning and seeking again. Calum Scott brilliantly makes his album quiet; using guitar and piano melodies like simple frames meant to hold the powerful, art-work that is his voice. WOW! He can belt and spear his vocals like love’s warrior such as, “Only You” and “Give Me Something”. The simpler he makes his sonic back-drop, the more you realize this man is a vocal stimulant that give you what you emotionally need to lose and try to win again at love.
