Concert Review: Calum Scott Is The Most Charming Person At Gramercy Theatre

Calum Scott won my heart at Gramercy Theatre. This singer/songwriter is literally a charmer, but not purposefully. His charisma comes from his sweet, humble demeanor. Scott rose to fame through Britain’s Got Talent after a gut-wrenching, emotionally bare rendition of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”. The singer has been steadily conquering international waters because of his innate ability to show the openness and the brokenness of a heart in love. Thus, the fact that he was a kind, amiable personality elevated his talent.

Kindness is a big deal to me, and, in Scott’s concert, it furthered to listeners his stardom. As Scott walked out unto the stage, he was coy and seemed shocked that so many people had come to see him; something he publicly marveled and smiled about throughout the show. His unawareness of his likability and sheer “it” factor drew the audience to him in the same way it did when he appeared on Britain’s Got Talent. He is so friendly and casual as he tells stories of his family and friends that you feel like you also are related to him. That kind of approachability cannot be copied, and makes his concert so much funner. As people sat, danced, and drank their beers to his songs, there were moments of such ease that Scott’s performance did not feel like an elaborate show as much as a welcoming reunion. Not one person in that audience did not feel like they had grown up with him, especially because of how intimate and interpersonal he is as he speaks to audience members. Moreover, his inability to not smile was infectious, and pushed further the sentimental distinctions between Calum Scott: the artist and Calum Scott: the person.

When Scott sings his songs, you can see his artistry take over. Suddenly, he is this noble, paternal figure lulling the audience with his cover of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers”  or like a prince declaring love to the queen of his heart in “You Are The Reason”. For Scott, each song is not only a soundscape for him to sing upon, but also a platform for him to physically express his spirit. It was fascinating to watch him go from a funny tale about his sister or his best friend, and then transform into the most broken man ever in “Come Back Home”. His ability to act out his songs provides both a mental trip and impression upon the audience, that throughout his concert, only grows because you  feel like you are getting to know him as a human being. I cannot elaborate enough how his approachability will help him become a bonafide superstar. This young man does not even have his debut album out, and I can guarantee that it will be a massive hit from what I heard and saw in his live show.

Dancing On My Own (Tiesto Remix)

Calum Scott has one of the richest voices to soon hit the radio. His vocals feel expensive, which I know is an odd word to describe a man’s voice. Yet, his capacity to pluck out vulnerability from both listeners and lyrics, while maintaining an aura of mutual elegance and good humor, will have the whole world clamoring for him and his music very soon. His voice will be a growing welcome and newness to the radio that does not have anyone sounding like him in its mainstream roster. By having a voice and style that is distinct to him, Scott has the opportunity to become like Adele or Drake, where listeners flock to their music because of their uniqueness. No one sounds like these artists without coming off like copies, and Calum Scott, for all his song covers, is purely original. Once, the world hears his future single, “Rhythm Inside”, I can only imagine the “Sold Out” stamps next to his future concerts. He is definitely an exciting artist to watch in both career and concert. For More Infomariton On Calum Scott Click Here.
