Album Review: Capital Cities Invite You To Join In “Swimming Pool Summer”

I love when artists give me what they promise, especially when they promise light-hearted. It is like, when your parents say. “We are getting ice-cream, tonight”, and you actually do. Capital Cities celebrate summertime romance with their new EP, ‘Swimming Pool Summer,’ which is, in essence, a concept album about a love-stuck guy who can’t get a weekend date with his busy dream girl. The idea opens the doors for Capital Cities typical, bright synth-pop.

Five tracks feel too short for how sparkling this album plays as Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant exchange, harmonize, and back each others’ pining vocals. I know that “pining” is the equivalent to whining for many, but Capital Cities’ synth-pop is meant to make you groove as you envision their 80’s rom-com lyricism. From “Swimming Pool Summer” to “Girl Friday (feat. Rick Ross)”, the record stretches and skates through whamming chords and tapping keys. Capital Cities is not here to bust with mindless fun. They want to shimmeringly surf through beach memories and the mildly obsessive crushes we get during youthful summers. For some reason, being young, and in the heat, makes you fall in love instantly and devoutly, which can make tracks like “Drifting” and “Drop Everything” truthful odes to our emotional extremes. The younger you are, the more potent you feel your sentiments. Thus, Swimming Pool Summer is a brief, buoyant dance-fest asking you to feel crushes like you are 18 in a summer camp.
