Album Review: Broken Social Scene Give You A Giant Hug Of Thunder

Broken Social Science (BSS) give you a giant Hug Of Thunder; a record that roars and rivets like the weather, itself. When you think of thunder, you may think of it in fear. It is a loud presence that reminds humanity of the divinity of Mother Nature, and thus, the lack of control of our human one. Nobody can go out and say, “Hey Thunder, Shut Up! You are making me uncomfortable!”, and, literally, see thunder go away. In some ways, life is the same way.

With 15 members, Broken Social Scene is anything but “broken”. This amount of talented musicians with their own ideas of euphoric creativity, makes BSS appear like the first psychedelic orchestra. Absolutely nothing of this album aims to be short or clear in its mindfulness. “Protest Song”, “Vanity Pail Kids”, and “Victim Lover” are testaments to their artful emotions and technique. They want their audience to sift through the symbols and sentimental nuances of an album that feels like its happily everywhere. Now, I am not saying this as a diminishment of their records or how meticulously the breakdown keys, chords, and drums in songs such as “Stay Happy” and “Gonna Get Better”. On the contrary, BSS has made an album the concisely radiates how unclear humanity is in defining and developing itself. Lead vocalists such asm Leslie Feist and Ariel Engle shine in adding a dazzling dizziness to the album’s ambient feel. They, along with Kevin Drew, come like added hues to the color splashes that course through this record, which is more social commenting than perceived. “Towers And Masons”, “Skyline” , and “Mouth Guards Of The Apocalypse” etch out the power plays that leave people feeling socially less than what they are spiritually worth. Yet, admittedly, you can only grasp their message and lyrics after a few listens, because the atmospheric instrumentals are too entrancing to ignore.

Hug Of Thunder is definitely and literally an album to listen. It is arranged to turn even the most unimaginative person into the Willy Wonka of Sweet Dreams. Its ability to invigorate and stimulate your mind for nearly an hour is not to be applauded lightly. I am deeply impressed with how BSS has built more than a soundscape…. They have built a SOUND KINGDOM! You can envision to sonic acres and homes that manifest as BSS tries to find in word, sound, and heart what is to be apart of, feel, and try to inspire everything around you.
