Album Review: Charlotte Day Wilson Shows Strength In Stone Woman

A stone can be thrown, tossed, kicked, and completely ignored. It lives as one of the smallest, dirtiest aspects of the lagoon or jungle where it can be found. Yet, stone finds its strength in that it never changes its foundation no matter where it goes or what others decide to do with it. Charlotte Day Wilson is a Stone Woman.

In Stone Woman, Wilson explores her inner solid: her heart. From “Funeral” to “Doubt”, she analyzes how she has survived every disappointment that tossed her away from a relationship or kicked her out of a plan she thought best for herself. Yet, the keyword is she “survived”. Sometimes, I wonder what we mourn more; that we had to go through a traumatic experience or we are now aware we will have to go through more? There is no such thing as one “major” suffering; heartbreak is a consistent acquaintance as we try to make happiness a constant friend. Wilson has created  folk- R&B-artworks that pin and point at these truths.
Charlotte Day Wilson – Stone Woman (Official Video)

Wilson arranges her songs like branches sprouting, cracking, and rolling through darker ground. “Stone Woman”, “Nothing New”, and “Falling Apart” have a “mystery” feel to them; with their keys feeling tied to shades of grey, which is exactly what Wilson wants. If you are trying to figure out how to feel good about your strength, then get ready for some grey matter! Realizing you are resilient is a badge of honor, but it also means you have been through war. The irony is that Wilson’s voice oozes as peace, itself.
Charlotte Day Wilson – Doubt

Wilson velours her voice like an embroidered scarf stuck between those “sonic” branches. Her vocals are light yet designed to make a statement, and add a splash of baroque colors to her grey, music forest. Thus, Stone Woman, for however digitized in sound, finds its earthiness in Wilson’s vocals. She becomes, exactly, what she lyrically/ spiritually seeks: a reason to revel in staying grounded.
