Album Review: Lo Moon’s Debut Is A Romance Fantasy

It is hard to believe that Lo Moon is making their debut. They are one of the those bands that have a “forever effect”, which is what I call when you feel a debuting artist has been around for an eternity. This is excellent because it is allows Lo Moon to glide into your music sphere, and their self-titled record highlights my FAVORITE aspect of their “music eternity”: their mature, grandiose take on romance.

Being romantic is not easy because it requires creativity, other-centeredness, and a personal vulnerability, which is why Lo Moon are the epitome of romance. They take all these qualities and put them into swelling and surging melodies that burst like bubbles of love. They arrange their songs like one would a romance novel: You have the beginning, when the lovers meet. The middle, which is when life disrupts their initial honeymoon phase. Then you have the end, which is when the pair decide that, for better or worse, they are good together. Who does not want to hear that?!

Electric rock + cathartic vocals = Euphoria! You listen up as Matt Lowell’s vocals radiate every single emotion you feel as you fall into another’s arms. He has a Peter Gabriel/ Phil Collins’ effect where he makes love sacred, and emotes his notes to have a natural melodrama that could make a dinner date feel like a Night At The Opera. Thus, when you hear Lo Moon’s guitars of sparkling joy pour over baselines that tide over like dark water, once again, you feel like you have entered a romantic, fantasy novel. Hence, tracks like, “This Is It”, “Wonderful Life”, “Loveless”, and “Real Love” are epic and gorgeous, and remind that you should feel ecstatic about finding love.

Word of Advice! Don’t take someone’s love as a given! The great thing about love is that, technically, you do not “need” it. Love never paid off a bill, send someone off to college, or cured cancer. Yet, it motivates all people that can and will do that. Motivations make a move feel worthy, and that is what love is “worthiness”. Lo Moon’s debut makes you celebrate the worth of love, and how it turns every action into an accomplishment.
