Album Review: Courts’ “Back Of The Mind” Stays In You Head

Courts is straight-up feel good. In four tracks, their new EP, Back Of The Mind, gives you the exhilaration of a good workout. You dance to their beats till you sweat, hydrate on their lead singer Chris Moody’s vocal flows, and lay down after all is done.

Frankly, I am not surprised Elton John loves this band. They are like a walking club of funkadelic guitars, keys, and bass (Dan, Reece, and Luke Baker), and a drum-rolls (played by Joe Choppen) that you wish you could replay when you entered the room. Frankly. I want to download the whole album, and make it my entrance music because that is the type of ambiance it sets; as if you are beginning something great and exciting. “Feel My Love” brings back the 70’s discotheque vibe when studio 54 felt more like a home than your actual apartment. Moody spews rhymes and sings verses as if he were spinning through rhythms like the Tasmanian Devil. He is quick, reckless, and effortlessly charming, all at once. Moreover, who does not want to feel love? “Any Of Us” and “Move The Roots” turn the desire to feel love into one of “fitting in”, which are not distant. Sometimes, you just want to roll with the crowd, which radiates in Courts’ guitar arrangements that glisten as if they are releasing orbs more than notes. While these two songs cool down the dance effect of Courts on listeners, do not be surprised if still you find yourself listening to these songs and dancing on your subway ride. “True Say” simply takes over your mind with its bouncing rhythms and thus euphoria. Personally, to be able to give the same kick of adrenaline as a fitness routine or a night at the club while being less than 20 minutes, makes Courts’ Back Of The Mind an EP to get HERE.
