Album Review: Freja The Dragon Has Been “Long Gone Girl”

Prediction! An “Alanis Morrissette Era” is coming back to music! Not only will Adele return to give us her heartbreak ballads, but I feel a shift will come in music, inspired by the pandemic, for people to go more 90’s acoustic. Even Bedroom R&B will try simmer and slow in reverb! How am I predicting this? It is not just being intuitive; it is about looking at how trends speak to history. You can’t come back from the quietness of quarantine without feeling like the silence spoke to you. Yet, no need to call the doctor because Freja The Dragon’s has a diagnosis: you have been “Long Gone Girl.”
Freja The Dragon – Give You All My Love (Animated Artwork Video)

Freja The Dragon’s Long Gone Girl, out May 8, is a perfect blend of 90’s rocker pop mixed with our current music, eco-system’s penchant for soft futurism. We love a beat that feels like a pillow swung by Ryan Gosling in 2049. Perhaps, this is because we all wish the future would be a lot softer to us than our present, but lyrics show we know it won’t be…. at least… not immediately. In Long Gone Girl, Freja The Dragon delicately spits fire as if a dragon doesn’t need to work hard to produce smoke. For her, just look at life! People break each other’s hearts, try to stop each other’s dreams, or even feel they can be mean just to be it! The worst part is that, as an individual, we don’t always pick up or know how to NOT feed other’s darkness.
Freja The Dragon – Cut Me Loose (Lyric Video)

From “Give It All Up” to “Give You All My Love,” Freja The Dragon’s strings and drums press like dust settling from the internal wars that are sparked by outer ones. Honestly! Who is not affected by the world? Yet, for Freja The Dragon, her tone is capable of both supple and singed textures; making her lyrics feels like emotions such as, regret, redemption, and overall breakthrough. Such feelings are perfect, particularly as we try to figure out post- quarantine life. I’m sure people got into their heads during this time, and Freja The Dragon’s Long Gone Girl, out May 8, is a musical embrace to getting in your head so that you can finally get in your heart.
