Album Review: Houndmouth Introduce Their “Golden Age”

You ever hear an album, and your immediate reaction is, “Ooooooo, I like this!” That is what I felt listening to Houndmouth’s Golden Age. It feels big in message, production, and overall impact upon listen. It hits your eardrums like a spaceship landing on your mind like a planet, and it’s enough to impress Ziggy Stardust.

It makes sense that Golden Age is rather spacey in its ambiance. When you think Golden Age, humanity’s past and future ventures into the cosmos will come into play. Hence, melodies fuzz, drums roll, and hooks twinkle like an astronaut floating through the galaxy. “Black Jaguar”, “Never Forget”, and “Strange Love” radio in like signals, in which Matt Meyers radiates through like a narrator/ emotional spark. His vocals seem nerveless and composed; like a man that never shows he is shook by love, despite quaking to its whims. On one hand, such a vibe makes the spirited, zipping arrangements of “Coast to Coast” and “This Party” feel lively, but it also preps you to be surprised by more intimate tracks like “Modern Love”.
Houndmouth – This Party [Official Music Video]

From “Young Again” and “World Leader” there are a few tracks that turn down the notches, and bring Golden Age’s mystical, Neil Young feel into an intimate level of observance. Both songs speak to longing for both a better world, but also a time when you felt like a better person. Their message culminates Golden Age as a call to reignite people’s desire to make life/ the world better, while realizing it always needed work. Sometimes, we look back on the past with nostalgic eyes, forgetting that when our past was our present, we were looking back, as well. Thanks to Meyers cool, etched vocality, you realize the more your push back the work you need to do to better yourself, the ones you love, and the world, the more you pile onto your shoulders and look back lighter times.

Frankly, I am really excited to see Houndmouth played this record live. It is a good album with tracks such as, “Golden Age” and “Waiting For The Night”, being made to light the party on fire. I can already hear the “WHOOAAAS!” when their beginning chords hit, and people know they are about to feel really fun. For More Information On Houndmouth And To Buy Golden Age on August 3 Click Here.
