Album Review: Joyner Lucas Makes You Want To Dial “508-507-2209” Till Its Number 1

Joyner Lucas’ new record, 508-507-2209, elaborates that Lucas can drop-kick a verse like gymnastics, but cannot avoid the difficulties and discrepancies of living life poor and black in America. For all the talent, wisdom, and ambition in the world, the record lays out how a man makes himself a king even when he feels like his kingdom is made of salt and ashes. Asking both a spiritually symbolic and social question, “How do you keep what makes you gold, when no even sees you as worthy enough to shine?”.
Joyner Lucas – Just Like You (508)-507-2209

The only thing worse than rejection is indifference. Tracks, “Just Like You”, “Lovely”, and “FYM” show the genuine battle to keep your inner light when the world sees you as darkness. Lucas has even  used his videos to confront the troubles and pain faced by children raised in a world without heroic role models. His album is a testament to the  deep, quiet voice in our minds and hearts that tell us that, we, as an individual, a member of our community, and member of humanity are more than what we are giving and receiving from our surroundings. How to safeguard yourself from political and  personal attacks are a non-stop basis from songs “Literally” to “On Lonely Night”. While Hip Hop and music, in general, are playgrounds for societal commentary not everybody has the charm and power of Lucas’ flow. He can hit you with verses that breaks though your mental walls like a Titan holding a steel hammer, and then dial his delivery and pitch down to an intimate seduction. His song with Snoh Aelegera “Forever” is probably my favorite. Seeing the easiness with which he spews his lines match the ease of Aelegera’s voice makes me want to hear them together, literally, forever. In addition, it shows Lucas never loses his shine even when standing next to someone’s brightness as in his track with Stefflon Don “Look What You Made Me Do”. Together these two pour over verses like Hypnotiq; with a neon -blues tone that intoxicates listeners. Moreover, Lucas motivates listeners’ eagerness to put the volume up.
Joyner Lucas – I’m Sorry (508)-507-2209

Beyond his released singles like, “I’m Sorry”, there are plenty of tracks that could earn a blast on the radio such as, “We Gonna Be Alright” or “I Need More”. Yet, he as no problem experimenting with sound, from fuzzed guitars and stretched synths, to prove that he is trying to innovate music according to his genius and not of others. While songs like “Lullaby” have soulful bounce that lifts and juggles Lucas’ radiant rhyming, “Ultrasound” ,”Keep It 100”, and “Way To Go” are the ones that show Joyner Lucas wants his sonics to be as outside the box as he feels as a person. While he, lyrically, peers from society with a skirted distance that ranges from anger and love, his music is pure creativity.
