Album Review: Lykke Li Is The Socrates of Love In So Sad, So Sexy
Lykke Li’s So Sad, So Sexy hit me right in the feels. Why? Because not many albums balance how much we could not love ourself while wanting to be loved by someone else. It may seem like a paradox, but “misery loves company” is not simply about how Misery wants to hang out with someone and bring them down. It is about wanting to hold someone’s hand as you try to heal your loneliness with the fact that you are not alone.
If there are two things that WILL ALWAYS be on Lykke Li’s side, it is her voice and her songwriting skills. “Bad Woman”, “Better Alone”, “Deep End”, and “Jaguars In The Sky” hit emotional conundrums that really is “so sad, so sexy”. On one hand, her rhythms are way more electric and digitized than ever before. Her scintillating voice, that culls and lulls the heaviest sentiments into lightness, feels warped into a computerized Heaven. Thus, sonically, you want to sway and lay out to this album that sounds like a conglomerate of what makes a modern, music hit. But then…… the lyrics hit.

“Sex, Money, Feelings Die” to “Last Piece,” make you cry with their lyrical bitterness. It is as if Lykke Li has softened the gnawing, grinding voice that tells you nothing is good enough for your joy. She embraces love for its finite, fickle nature while trying to reach for its eternal, ethereal essence. Yet, once again, you have to sift through beats that shimmer and sizzle in sultriness to realize what they, very realistically, embody about humanity; we try to look good more than we try to feel it. Hence, why we want someone to love us; we hope that one day we will not need to wear love and happiness as a facade because it has, literally, became our spiritual skin.

Yes, I got deep in this review, but I am fascinated by how some of the best, rawest female songwriters, like Lily Allen, have rhythmically upped their sound into a dancing corner while assuring their verses remain as vast as the universe’s floor. This is not an easy feat because we follow our ears through sound, and THEN let our minds process the sonic layers. Thus, we presume an acoustic guitar ballad will carry more weight. Yet, So Sad, So Sexy proves a soundscape it a platform for an artist’s philosophies and heartfelt discoveries, and Lykke Li is the Socrates of Love.
