Album Review: Sløtface Tell You To “Try Not To Freak Out” About Haters

I LOVE Sløtface! They remind me of the bad-ass 90’s, femme rock bands like, Garbage and The Cranberries, that soundtracked every teen film where a nerdy, art girl taught a football jock how to be a good, civil human being. In essence, their newest album, Try Not To Freak Out, is a self-help guide for every bright, young eccentric that thinks their uniqueness is what turns people away, but it might be the very thing that keeps them coming.
Sløtface – Nancy Drew

Whether they intend to or not, Sløtface are odd beacons of positivism. Lyrically, they are focused on deconstructing every instant where someone embarrassed you and made you feel like digging your head into a pillow was better than lifting it up…. yeah! Laugh or not, we have all been humiliated by someone, and you do not need to be in high-school to feel the wrath of someone’s bravado against you, but lead singer Haley Shea is here to say, “F**K SELF-PITY!”. Sorry self-pity, but Haley sees no use to you, and her brazened vocals obliterate the sentiment as an option. She chops and grits her voice like a super-hero kicking bullies’ asses in “Pitted”, “Nancy Drew”, and “Backyard”. With chords prepped and propped like tiny axes cutting through any negativity you have internalized, Shea feels like she is in a car driving to her Arya Stark style enemies’ list with guitarist/ back-up vocalist Tor-Arne Vikingstad there to second her revenge. “Galaxies”, “Magazine”, and “Try” show the struggle of want to fight against those that tear you down while also dealing with a world that, sort of, applauds it. In every film, the bully is the popular kid, the mean girl is the rich one, and the beautiful guy is also the mentally vacant one. Who can deny that they want popularity, wealthy, and beauty? No one! Yet, part of Haley’s attractive rage is that she show they reason we are so mad or unhappy is because these things have NO MORAL REQUIREMENT!
Sløtface – Magazine

It sucks to live in a world where being horrible could get you a lot of great things that we all want, but Sløtface REFUSE to let that be a step into self-pity. Instead, they are adding sweeteners through their melodies and hooks to make the bitter bite of this reality more digestible.
