Album Review: The Hype Lives In Hoodie Allen’s New York

Hoodie Allen IS a New Yorker, and his new album, The Hype, is a love letter to the sounds and souls you will encounter in the concrete jungle. NYC is an unstoppable force jittering with an energy that leaves many asking “How do you live here?!” for better or worse. Some grow intoxicated with our bombastic, fast-paced life while others are looking for the next bus to nature. Yet, Hoodie Allen shows how addicting it is to live in The Hype of New York.

There is not much to say of this album beyond how well catered it is to the partying nights of NYC. Each track is made to be blasted in your car or in your room, while the window, is open so that the earth cane= be quaked by its music. We all know and, at least once, have been the ones obnoxiously blasting a song as we pass by our streets (LOL!). Yet, not everybody can achieve the sweet rewards of being blasted…. Sarah Mclachlan or Enya will not be blasted. Yet, Hoodie Allen and songs like “Fakin”, “Something Dangerous”, and “Runnin Circles” will put to maximum volume for having the beats and bounce that would make a skyscraper jiggle in rhythm. Allen’s flow has been marked for its brisk coolness. He spews his rhymes, especially when trying to seduce, like he is the most popular in high-school. I know that may seem like a “far-fetched” analysis, but nobody feels more like a king than “that guy” who dominated EVERY SOCIAL CIRCLE and got every lover of his desire. Hoodie Allen is “that guy” and spits his verse with a cockiness that says, “Hello Ego!”, and you do not mind. Whether he is confronting haters or conversing with lovers, we all have wished to be cocky, and tracks such as “ Play The Field”, “Ain’t Ready”, and “Know It All”, encourage the desire to have all the attention without the responsibility. Would that not be the dream? To have to world admire you for no reason beyond the fact that you exist like everybody else. Still, Hoodie Allen’s “arrogance” is all in fun.

With trap, trop, and tripping beats that hook into ears like a diamond earring, Allen’s The Hype is all about the deliciousness of indulgence. It is about the great times that are born when you let go of SO MUCH self-consciousness and say, “You know what?! I’m am going to go crazy tonight and love it!”. There is no room for after-thoughts throughout this album that is hit single after hit single. Thus, get in the car, pump the volume to obnoxious levels, and enjoy Hoodie Allen’s The Hype on September 29 by Clicking Here.
